I have a HF 20-ton press. There are several utube videos on using standard tools (sockets, bolt, even a hammer, etc...) for removing and installing bearings. Or, you can take it to a buddy or shop to press out and in for you. I forgot to mention Febest makes a replaceable pulley/bearing for the V6 tensioner, part # 0187-GRJ200. It is Chinese-made, but Febest, from my experience, tends to have good QC.

Grinding is, generally, indicative of bad bearings. The bouncing could be the spring in the tensioner is bad, or it could be the pulley bearings are so worn out, they are the cause of the bouncing. Consider replacing just the pulley; if it is not the cause, you will at least have a new pulley as backup.

Keep in mind, the tensioner pulley bolt is reverse-threaded.

Definitely the tensioner, I've replaced all pulleys etc.. and the noise comes right back. The tensioner spring is damaged for sure. Not only does it bounce around a lot (up and down) but, there's a lot of play with arm pulling outward.

If that's the case, then there are 2 things that can go wrong with the tensioner:

    A. Pulley bearing
    B. Tensioner spring

Assuming such, replacing just the pulley bearing is a crap shoot.

That said, I still appreciate Chuy's input.

It took me maybe 3-4 hours. I used a socket set, some long ratcheting wrenches. It was a real PIA, not a lot of steps just tight as hell to work.

It's been a minute but, I believe the bolts for the tensioner were 12 or 14mm and I was able to get to the majority of them through the wheel well once I got the AC compressor out of the way. 1/4 drive and extensions worked best for me, gave more room for me to work

You don't remove it as in "disconnect from refrigerant lines" - then pull out of vehicle.

You remove it from the mounting bracket - then set aside to provide access to the tensioner.

Make sure you remove refrigerant before disconnecting the ac lines

if you are undertaking this job,and not disconnecting the AC lines, invest in a set of flex sockets... i could not figure out a way to get the bolt out without it. also have a ton of different socket extensions on hand!! the AC bolts are hidden away and you almost have to be a contortionist to get to them. FLEX SOCKETS SAVED THE DAY!!!
i saw some people using small wrenches in there and while it will fit, i could not get enough leverage to break the ceased bolt... you will need jedi patience.

Hey Chris, just got my 2006 TRD Sport. Had a shredded belt so did the 3 idler pulleys no problem. Have the tensioner arm and am curious if you have any pointers for replacing the tensioner from the bottom? Really sounds like a pain to do it from up top and might be out of my wheelhouse as I’m no mechanic. Thanks for your time!

Its not about experience just how to get your hands in to get the 2 bolts which are below the ac compressor and the inner fender well as shown in Goosie0080's pictures a couple post up.

Agree with this. It's not a terrible job. I did remove the bottom skid plate to get some of the bolts from the bottom. Removing the fan and shroud opens up a ton of space in the front.

Before you go through all this A$$ pain, are you trying to just replace the pully to get rid of the squeal or is there an issue with the tensioner? The reason I ask is, you can change all the pullys from under the truck, in about an hour with out removing the AC compressor, fan or fan shroud.

I’m thinking about changing the water pump and hoses on my 06. While I’m at it, thought I could also do the pulleys, tensioner, and a new belt. How much easier would all this be if I removed the radiator, shroud, and fan?
