Dog mods for your 3rd gen?

Hey guys, I got my German Shepherd about 3 months ago. He’s about 5 months old and really starting to turn into a dog.

I’m wondering what all you guys have done to your third gens to accommodate your puppers?

Right now he rides in the cab with a doggy hammock when we go places but I’m playing with the idea of buying a pap cap and trying to ventilate it, and buying one of those gunner kennels so he has some room to move around.

Just wanted to hear what all modifications you guys have done, and also, how do you clean up all the hair

 

I put leather seats in my 13 and now only buy leather because of my dog. I also plastic wrapped the rear carpet in my 15 to prevent hair from getting in it but didn't see much improvement. Now I just travel locally with her in the bed and long distance I give her a bath before we go to cut down on the hair.

 

I installed Clazzio leather seat covers and our Jack rides on the back with the seats folded down. Worked in my '05 DC, works in the '19.

Otherwise I plan to remove the rear seat and create a dedicated dog spot on the 40 side of the split and use the 60 side for storage.

 

The rear seat in my Limited stays down 100% of the time. Put a 2" piece of upholstery foam down on top of that. As far as dog hair goes, Dyson & Hoover stay busy in my truck.

 

We have little dogs so black towel on the back to protect the leather. More importantly we use adjustable pet seatbealt leads so they're safe.

For the beach, we have the ARB awning, even though they can fit under the truck no problem lol. Also from Chewy we got these tie out spikes we dig in with a smittybilt shovel. Still trying to find a water/food bowl that doesn't get sand in it lol

 

My current setup uses one of these platforms and a hammock over that.




I I am still debating on folding the seats down and building a platform like shown in this picture:



But making it wider to extend out to the doors, and then using a hammock as well for hair control.

When I had my 2017 DCOR 4x4 I built my very large (110lb) White German Shepherd a platform that fits flush over the rear seats when folded down and plugs to fill the rear seat storage so the whole back of the cab is flat. It was covered in cheap indoor/outdoor carpet. Ultimately I got tired of the German Shepherd fur all over me all the time especially since I wear a suit to work almost every day so when I got the 2019 he lost his truck privileges and I just bought an old XJ to drive him around in. He's must larger than most GSDs but the shedding is the same.

This is going to be a good route for my truck

 

I have a Shepard mix and will be taking him in camping adventures. He loves being in the woods but he’s the type that needs to with me at all times. Just started a platform for him. I built it in 60/40 fashion and in about 10-15 bolts I can have the seats back in. Looking at lining it for a moisture barrier and then carpeting it once I figure out how I want to do some doors on the top to access pockets and such. I will also be mounting a fridge in there eventually too. He has enough room to lay front to back and he’s about 80lbs. He likes being up higher so he can see better, plus it gives me a ton on extra storage.

 

My dog mod is dog hair everywhere in the cab but hey, what do you expect from the bird dog limo?

 

Ditto. Bought the softopper to give the pup some shade. She HATES riding in the cab so I made a three point paracord harness to strap her in the bed for short car rides.

An Intermediate Gunner Kennel with a fan attached to the door fits in my 18' DCSB with only the long section of the rear seat folded down, then I ratchet it down to the baby seat anchors in the back of the cab. Intermediate Gunner Kennel Size is perfect for my 70 lb boxer. Although a big German Shepherd might need the biggest gunner kennel size and throw it to the back.

I also recently added more drings to the bed to strap down the kennel for when he is riding in the back.

 

The best way to reduce your workload in dealing with shedding hair, is to take steps to prevent it to begin with.

I lost one on my GSDs 2 years ago due to spleen cancer (typical in large breed dogs), so I'm down to 1 German Shepherd. If you feed your German Shepherd a quality diet (either species appropriate and balanced, home-cooked or raw food), you'll be surprised how little a German Shepherd will shed due to improved health. Coupled with an occasional brushing with either a shedding rake, Furminator, etc., you'll have very little stray hair to deal with!

fold down the backseats, dog crate on the seat. If that takes up too much room, canopy with crates in the bed, tied down. I never go anywhere with the dogs just on the seat, it isn't safe, and those dog "restraints" are no good either. Whatever crate you pick, make sure it has some give to it. You don't want metal or something that doesn't have some give to it. I use Ruffland kennels.
