Sounds like the traction control just kicking in so you don't slip the tires. Should you have traction on the surface or is it say mud or pinstraw covered that might cause multiple wheel traction loss? If you disable the trac control...what happens?

    Welcome to the forum.

If by "not Spinning" you mean not uselessly spinning but actually have traction, well that is normal.

Is it only in the four-wheel-drive Tacoma?

I'm only in 2wd in my 4x4 all the time...and it's really only 1wd. We're you putting it into a 4wd mode like high?

Completely normal, it's the hill start assist using the traction control systems to help keep you from rolling backwards.

I think it's only the 4x4s and pros that do have it. My 17 sr5 2wd doesnt have hill assist

The system comes on to prevent tire spin since spinning tires do no good at moving the truck.
If you cannot move in normal Trac then do a quick press of the vsc off button. In H2, the mode is called Auto LSD with the quick press. In H4, the mode is called Trac Off since 2012 (a terrible name). Auto LSD & Trac Off are both Traction Control on but with the engine regulation turned off. So, braking of the slipping tire(s) but full engine output to power you ahead.

Edit: I have not tested the 3rd Gens and they may have screwed with the operations of the button. I would like more of you 3rd Gen 4X4 owners to find a steep hill and compare Trac on vs Trac off.
