8 or 10 speed tranny? That would get fried while towing if you ever attempted to go that high. You should never use such high gears for towing, those are good for high speed highway cruising.

Try dropping a gear or two, and you will notice that Taco no longer struggles with your Jeep load.

I tow around 6000 lbs, including up and down the Rocky Mountains, just never in 6th gear (manual transmission)

most of the hate comes from 2nd gen guys who believed for a long time their truck was the best. Now that the 3rd is hands down better in every aspect they get super jealous.

I can't believe people think this is only a 3.5 issue.

Do we collectively realize that the 3.6 Pentastar and (oh shit it can't be true!) 4.0 1GRE also have had this issue reported? And the 3.4 and the 22R and the 22RE? ....and Land Rovers? Granted, they haven't attracted the dog pile the 3.5 has, but I attribute that to the fact that this is the 3rd gen forum we're talking about.

I posted the links on one of the many other "smoking on an incline threads".

Oh and hey, while we're at it, we need to recognize that the manufacturers reps for Cat will inform you that they don't recommend running any of their pavers, graders, dozers, backhoes, skippys, scrapers, etc. on inclines of greater than 25%.

BTW: Against my mild protests, my partners decided to go with Ford Ranger XLTs for our OE trucks (our 6.7 PS catastrophe seems to have been forgotten, but hey, at least they weren't Colorados). I really don't care, because we use these trucks for schlepping small parts back and forth to job sites and for our office staff to visit the sites. Oh, and like other Ford trucks, they literally give these things away. So I'm a proud papa to 5 little baby rangers.

....which is ironic because most of the shitposters who regularly sing the praises of the Ranger don't have the conviction to fucking buy one (I'm not looking your way Tacobella, so calm down).

we just live in an age where people want to whine about everything. I’m sorry your 3rd gen doesn’t tow 10k lbs uphill while getting 40mpg...
That being said, I’ve had both engines paired with the manual transmission, so I can’t speak for the auto guys. My 2017 with the manual tows great for what it is, and I think the 3.5 pairs much better with the manual. I have no trouble towing a 2500lb camper and gear through the mountains. That’s also lifted with 285 tires and about 500lbs of armor/bed canopy. I guess it’s apples to oranges with the manual, but I’ve taken the fussiness of the auto out of the equation.

Well, it's not as low-end as gasoline turbo or diesel engine, but 260lb-ft @ 4000 RPM is certainly more "low-end" compared to 260lb-ft at 4600 RPM.

The 3.5l does not offer as much low-end torque....plain and simple.

All of the people who apologize for that by saying, 'Well the Tacoma isn't meant for towing,' seem to forget that low-end torque has a lot of relevance outside out towing (carrying a payload, turning bigger tires, going up a steep incline, crawling over undulating terrain, ect.).

lol Not sure if that's sarcastic or a serious brag. I mean, my 130hp VW with the traction control on will spin a tire in the dirt too.

And your doing those activities at 4000 or 4600 rpm's??? Our reline is what, 6000.

Can some one find and compare the torque curve graph for each engine. I bet it is VERY similar and the average, meaning 99%, of 2nd gen & 3rd won't even notice a difference.

The 4.0l still offers its peak torque 600 RPM's lower...that might be a slight advantage in the grand scheme of things, but its still an advantage for truck applications.

And in fact, the older 4.0l's offered peak torque as low as 3700 RPM's...that's nearly 1000 RPM's lower compared to the 3.5l....they are different engines with different driving feels. Anyone who has spent time driving both will acknowledge that.

It's called low-end torque...believe it or not, that's an important factor for a lot of truck owners.

I don't see what the disconnect is here.

Really? Check the numbers at around 2,000 rpm, I'll bet there's a significant difference. That's where you need the power on the street, how often do you run around at redline?

Please, let me know the numbers, I honestly would like to know. I cannot find the comparison so I can see for myself.

It's lower compared to 4600 RPM's...that's easy enough math that even an elf should be able to figure it out. And like I said previously, the early 4.0l variants put into the Tacoma and FJ Cruiser actually made peak torque at 3700 RPM's.
