I wonder if they can charge you with receiving stolen property if it is your property to begin with.

Stealing tailgates is a good way to get yourself shot around these parts...

Buying stolen property is always risky business. Guess you gotta decide if that risk is worth the extra several hundred dollars. What I would recommend is a one of the locking kits some of the memebers here have for say. Bolts over the hinge so they can’t just open and take it without a fight.

It’s honestly based on your own morals. By buying stolen property, you’re feeding in to their scheme... which means you’re basically supporting their “business”. I personally wouldn’t get involved, unless you like supporting the same type of guys who stole yours.

Get one off craigslist or wherever else then do two things. Put a hose clamp on the passenger side so they at least need a screwdriver to release it. Second do one of the imitation popnlocks on listed the forum (costs about 10 bucks)). That way tailgate is locked when truck is locked and harder to steal. Unfortunately it is summer so you really cant leave your Rottweiler in the truck to deter folks

Could have also come off a truck in a major front-end collision/rollover/auto fire/someone spilled glitter all over the interior. Go check it out, if the guy seems sketchy or the vin sticker is scratched off, or your gut says no, don’t buy it. No reason to pass up a good opportunity before even looking at it.

Does this only happen in Cali? I think everytime I see one of these threads it's from there

You can get this to install. The one Torx bolt is a pain for some to get out, though.

I personally wouldn’t buy a tailgate unless I saw the wrecked truck it was coming off of.

When I’m in the more sketch parts of the town I’ll try to back into a tree/light pole/or another car. That way there’s not enough room for the tailgate to drop all the way.

I have a dash cam with a rear camera. It records while parked. I opted to have the LED blinking, hoping to deter a thief once they realize they are on camera.
