OVTune 3.5L Tacoma Supercharger and Twin Turbo Systems

Sorry, didn't mean to open this up with the auto vs manual.

Clutches don't scare me, I've changed at least 4 so far this life. I assume it's required with most significant power upgrades.

It's just with auto, my previous experience with supercharging and such, it decreases the lifespan. I have an auto 2011 and a giant transmission cooler fixes the heat issues.

 

Adding any significant power over stock will decrease the life of almost any transmission

Cooler fer suuuure. I can hit 230f on my trans pretty easily.

 

Don’t 3G’s have trans cooler already, as part of the towing package that was made standard in 2018?

 

Yeah they do.

 

I just searched and saw that they are tiny. About the size of a mailing envelope. You can easily fit one 4x the size and they’re cheap, like $40-50.

Some of the research I did exactly that. Searched for "EcoBoost turbo issues
'......I have concluded that the reason that you see more problems with the Ecoboost engines, in general, is the sheer number sold. With close to a million sold a year since 2011 (not even counting the Mustangs) and with 60% of those new sales are 2.3L, 2.7L & 3.5L Ecoboost engines, if there was an inherent issue, they would all have the same long term issues. Sales would fall and no one would buy any EcoBoost engine driven car or truck. But that's not the case. People have been buying Ford turbos in F150 at record numbers since 2011.

After my current experience with a 2.3 Turbo, I would love to see Toyota put a turbo on a 4 cyl for the Tacoma with 300+ pounds of torque @3000 RPM. That would equal the Ranger's output at least, It's a good start. Not to mention 22-27MPG easily if one does not spool up the turbo on every drive

Any time a 4cyl turbo can out perform a six-cylinder I am all in. Much less moving parts on a turbo'd 4 cyl than a non-turbo 6 cyl.

 

I'd take that stock unit off and install a larger one, small one is way to small, and far as manual vs auto, its you're money buy whichever you prefer!! I want a auto for simplicity myself but that's me.

 

My grandfather had a ‘15 F150 ecoboost and started having problems with the engine at about 75k. The problem? Ford didn’t take the time to gap the spark plugs at the factory. It’s a pretty widespread issue.

There’s a reason we all drive Toyotas...

 

My buddy has one too. Ran great until 90k and now it’s been in the shop 6 times leaving him stranded each time.

 

Hopefully the Toyota VVT cam gear assembly are a better design than ford as these will be the first to wear out prematurely under boost along with the fuel pump for direct injection.

 

Doesn't a supercharger wears the engine more than a turbo though? By putting extra strain on the crankshaft?

 

There is nothing Toyota left on that but a grill.. lol

Either they built it from the ground up custom then threw a grill on
Or started with a Tundra and tore it down leaving only the grill.
Either way it’s not a Toyota lol

 

Well lets see, I had 480,000 miles on my 3.4 motor all supercharged till a head gasket popped that was not related to the supercharger and now the TRD supercharger has almost 600,000 miles on it with rebuilds every 150,000 for 1000.00.
With 10 pounds of boost.
