Remote keyless entry on 2003 Tacoma -- missing or what?

I'm trying to figure out the remote keyless entry on a 2003 Tacoma DC 4WD TRD.

I changed my almost identical 2001 for a 2003 a year ago -- let go of a midwestern truck for a Colorado truck with *zero* rust, and the white paint I'd always wanted. I'll keep this 2003 a long time. Changed out the complete interior to keep the better condition/color of the 2001, too, so I got a real chance to understand how the interior is put together. The departed 2001 had the port/dealer installed TVIP alarm system so I know what that install looks like.

The keeper 2003 is reported to have factory RKE per the build sheet from Toyota.com attached below. (You'll see the keyless entry as part of convenience group CQ under installed equipment.)

I removed a crappy aftermarket alarm from the 2003 as part of the interior conversion. I did not find a separate remote keyless entry (RKE) module in the 2003 and there's no evidence that any wiring was fooled with beyond the aftermarket alarm. RKE is in the body control unit for this year truck, I think.

The truck will not enter remote programming mode using any of the ignition key/open-close door combinations I can find. The power locks work fine with switch or key, but it would be nice to have a remote too.

    Questions:
    1. Would any factory RKE gear have been removed to install the aftermarket alarm?
    2. Will a dealer scan tool give any RKE information on a 2003 Tacoma?
    3. Any other tips to figure out keyless entry on the truck?

    Thanks in advance, guys --

All kinds of strange things get removed and added to these trucks .

It might be that it did not play well with the After Market alarm.

    Never worked correct .

If you really want remote locks with a truck this old go aftermarket unless your budget is unlimited and it is the only way you will be happy.

Have you searched with your VIN for the remote keyless parts ??

Along these lines, on my 03, today received a remote online to have as an extra. Truck went through the programming procedure but would not accept the remote program.
Contacted the company and they asked for a FCC code off original.
If I could not get it, will have to contact Toyota with VIN for it.

02 4Runner extra fob worked first time last month.

Will wait to see if they send me a different one. New to this

Does your 03 have the TVIP alarm, TWJLee? You can usually tell by (1) a glass breakage sensor mounted in one of the switch blanks in the front console by the 12V power outlets, or (2) an original keyless remote with a red LED indicator that lights when the button is pressed. The Toyota VIP alarm is installed by the "port" after the truck has been shipped.

The factory RKE fob looks similar, but has no red LED and as it's not an alarm, there's no glass breakage sensor.

The two systems have different FCC numbers.

What procedure of key and door did you use to get your truck into remote programming mode?

Very, very nice looking specimen of taco my friend. I learned yesterday that TechStream can be used to change/modify many of those types of settings and things. TechStream is the program Toyota uses on their dealership computer for linking to the vehicles. This is something you can attempt yourself as well,

It appears I have the factory install. No sensor by the power ports.
Used this method to get it into programming mode-

the locks cycled through but would not accept the remote.

Thanks, Wisidr1. I've looked through those wiring diagrams in the FSM in the past -- I think you're right on in heading that way. Thing is, I've not been able to find a trigger from the RKE in that diagram. Must be someplace else?

The circuit as laid out seems to be the one guiding my truck now with no issues. Except no remote!

Very interesting, cruiserguy! I did not know TechStream was a DIY option. Have you downloaded the software and gotten it to connect to your vehicle yet?

Thanks, TWJLee. You're ahead of me, then! I've tried that sequence, and just tried it again twice, carefully. Not a peep from the locks.

I believe the correct key fob for factory RKE on our late Gen1 trucks is FCC ID: HYQ12BAN. Can't be sure though, 'cause I can't get into remote programming mode!

I have not. Was just shared with me yesterday. I have an old Panasonic Toughbook laptop, OLD. But I'm hoping the windows version cans still run TechStream. It looked pretty basic in those videos. I just had no idea TechStream provided the ability to change those things like door lock/fob settings, etc. I always thought it was some crazy key dance people or the dealer tech did. I thought TechStream was all the technical fancy schmancy data stuff. I'd love to find a functioning cracked version, etc

I downloaded Ver. 12.30.017 to an old Dell laptop running XP SP3 and it seemed to install. The installation did ask for a registration key though, which I skipped, so I'd be surprised if it connected without that. I'll have to get the right cable and see what's possible.

Yeah keep us updated too. I'm not very saavy when it comes to computers and the requirements and the jargon and that crap. So I definitely appreciate the details in your posts, thanks man

The simple download works to get the software on one's PC, but as expected it needs a license key to do anything. I'm unlikely to follow through on the guidance to hack the registration.

I'll see if I can find a tech to confirm that TechStream is a viable option, then happily pay for some tech time to get my RKE working (fingers crossed).
