Looking for some ideas for putting in a 110v inverter in my brand new 2019 SR5. I know, I know, the TRDs etc have the inverter setup from the factory. For various reasons, I couldn't justify the upgrade in price for the TRD levels, etc. But I really dug the 110v outlet in the bed.

At first I thought I might try OEM parts and retrofit the TRD setup in an SR5. But in seeing the pricing of the OEM inverters vs the capabilities, I figured I could get a better rated, higher wattage inverter for less money, and have greater versatility.

There are obviously a couple of different ways to skin this cat. 1 suggestion was to install a cigarette lighter power point in the bed, and then use a smaller inverter to plug into that when the need for it arrived. But there's obvious wattage limitations - I think I read that 150 is about the maximum watts you could pull from the cigarette lighter before you started blowing fuses.

Any thoughts on where a good place to hide an inverter in the interior of the cab might be? I know the OEM ones are mounted under the center console, but the access outlet for use is remotely mounted in the bed. Most inverters have the access outlets right on them, making that location impractical.

Obviously, the fewer holes I put in my brand new truck the better, so I'd like to really think this through.

You could put the inverter under your seat:notsure:

I added an outlet with the USB ports in the cab using the factory inverter. It's not eye appealing but it does what I need it too.

Nice. Behind the center console is a great spot, there’s a lot of room in there.

Some great ideas already! I like behind the right-rear seats, there's a big space there that I hadn't realized. Also intrigued at possibly in the center console itself with outlets on the back. Thanks for the input so far!

The bottom of the center console (under) is a very limited space. The OEM Inverter is very small.

I want to do the same, but I already have a factory installed dual usb plug behind my center console.

Any write ups for those who have used the built in usb plug for this?

IMO an aftermarket 600W PSW inverter is better than the factory 400W. 600W anytime, you have two AC plugs on the inverter, can run an AC extension cord and outlet into the cab, another AC cord/outlet to the bed.

Tried and worked for me five times in Toyota trucks is under the driver seat with a Samlex 600W PSW. https://www.donrowe.com/Samlex-SSW-600-12A-p/ssw-600-12a.htm

600W is the max IMO with the stock 130A alternator. The Samlex PST-600W is a good unit (and other brands), PST you can get a remote on/off switch but it's an inch taller than the SSW-600W therefore doesn't work under the driver seat.

Never tried one inside the center console since under the driver seat worked fine, but that could work. Cooling fan would operate ok with the lid open, could get to the on/off switch easily, short + DC cable run from the battery along the frame through the body grommet under the driver seat, short DC cable run to a ground on a seat bolt.

Wherever you put the aftermarket inverter with the stock batt and alternator, run it through a circuit breaker and a low-voltage disconnect like this https://www.donrowe.com/Samlex-BG-60-Battery-Guard-p/bg-60.htm

I rivet both the ckt breaker and low-voltage disconnect onto the fusebox cover in the engine bay then run the + cable along the frame with wire loom and zipties, through the grommet under the driver seat to the inverter.

It works, best of luck, have fun, took me four tries before I really got it all down pat.

Are you still working on this? Have you got it figured out?

I took a different approach and I'm in the process of installing a monster 1500W sine inverter behind the rear seat. I have all the parts, a plan of attack, and I installed a giant circuit breaker under the hood for the positive lead to the inverter. I just need to make time some weekend to finish the job.
