Whats the point of 35s?

I want to get more into off-roading but I am not sure if I need to get 35s or not

why do you actually need 35s?

Last week I drove through miles of washboard through different Reno trails, and I also drove through the miles of trails in the el dorado national forest. Stock suspension and stock tires. I got through everything with some challenges.

I see the need for better tires because I got stuck going uphill. I see the need for a lift because I banged up my TRD skid pretty badly. I see the need for better suspension because my shocks faded and the ride quality was terrible overall. However, there wasn’t a single instance where I felt I needed 35s.

I have never tried to crawl rocks, but are 35s absolutely necessary for that exercise?

 

If you have to ask you don't need them... People on 35s are doing much more extreme trails than washerboard forest road driving

This is truly one of those "if you have to ask" scenarios.

Sounds like you would be well served with a set of upgraded bilsteins, and a set of good AT tires. Maybe go up a size to 265/75/16 from 265/70/16

For the most part I've had 33" tires and just recently upgraded to 35". My friends rigs with 35"+ tires always performed better in snow and rock crawling.

 

You said you banged up your skid pretty bad. Going bigger tires gives you ground clearance. Getting a lift does nothing for your ground clearance of the axles and drive train.

A good upgrade for what you're looking into is some shocks with resivoirs to prevent shock fade, some beefier skids (BAMF 1/4" steel), sliders, and 33's. Challenge yourself on 33's and if you find you need more, you can move to 35's eventually. But that takes a lot of cutting, banging and trimming of the cab mount, pinch weld and wheel wells.

Get a Jeep TJ or CJ...31's, no lift, no problem including some rock crawling and tighter places than any tacoma will do...

The obvious answer is ground clearance.

You are right that 35s are overkill for the stuff you listed - washboards, dirt trails, small rock gardens, etc. If you stick to that, stock size tires should be plenty good.

But not all dirt trails are flat and easy. The video below is an example of what you could possibly run into while exploring new trails. It's not "crawling up a rock", but still a tough obstacle for your stock tires to handle.

Having 35's on a Tacoma is for more Intagram followers.

I feel the sweet spot for the Tacoma is 34" tires. 285/75/17. I can go do all the trails with a Tacoma with 35" tires with less rubbing and strain on the axles as well.

 

You can only truly raise pumpkin clearance with taller tires.
