Should I be talked out of BFGoodrich AT T/A KO2's?

Ive been really happy with BFG tires on my rovers over the years- but all have been in the Mud Terrain's. Im looking for something less aggressive for all around use to match with the 17" SEMA wheels I just ordered.

Should I be considering another brand these days? I see Falken getting some good attention, but I havent shopped outside of BFG tires in 15+ years. I know they are generally some of the more pricey tires on the rack.

I ran the old BFG T/A's for years on other trucks ...Have the KO2's now on my Tacoma . Have been really happy with them. They kicked serious ass this last winter .Iv'e read as well the Falkens are good . Iv'e read a lot of love/hate towards both on this forum .

 

I do know that tires are like toothpaste...everyone has opinions and diff experiences. Kicking ass in winter is important for me here in Maine...these stock tires suckkkkkkkkk! Thanks for the input

 

I feel with modern technology, a lot of new tires are very similar and closely matched with performance. You might find an A/T tire to be more road biased (Cooper AT3) vs an A/T tire to be more dirt biased (KO 2's), but still both very good overall.

I think KO2's are very over marketed and cause a general hype over them. I'm running Hankook Dynapro ATM's and they have been an amazing tire for me with over 70k miles and nearly 40% tread life left. Plenty of grip in sand and snow (mud not so much since they don't really self clean).


My next tire is going to be Yokohama Geolander G015's for sure.

 

Lots of great tires out there. I have had 2 sets of KO2s and think they are great all-round tires.

Since you're on 17s I would say go for the KO2s, but make sure you buy them in a C load rating as opposed to E. I have 16's and E is all that is available in 265/75/16. They've been great for traction in most conditions and tough as nails, but too rough a ride and painfully heavy (MPG!!). They will be replaced with a c rated tire of a different model (thinking Falken Wildpeak AT3/W).

Thanks for that advice. I know zero about load rating so I need to refresh my memory and smarts on that stuff before I drop 1100 on rubber!

 

I run Toyo ATs, theyre great tires on and off the road!

 

It's really hard to beat ko2s on road and off. Cooper makes good tires also. My experience with ko2s has been nothing but good. Friends with wildpeak's have had issues with balancing and riding rough. But other have had good experience. My vote would be ko2s.

 

I'm off road almost daily for work and my E range ko2's give me great confidence and haven't let me down. Deep snow they worked amazingly

E rated are good tires but this past time I went with c rated and absolutely love the ride. It is so much better and no problems so far offroad.

 

My KO2s have not disappointed.

A bunch of us have 255/85/16s and it’s been a great way to get 33s on a stock 3rd Gen suspension (255/80/17 is the same total size but more wheel / less meat on the tires)…..with no trimming / chopping whatsoever.....and the spare tire fits under a short bed without having to move the bracket:

If you need a snow capable tire (something with that three-peak mountain snowflake “3PMSF” symbol) and don’t want to run a second set of dedicated winter tires, the it’s worth looking at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S....they’re an all-terrain with great winter capability

I skipped the KO2s in favor of the Cooper ST Maxx because I’ve read over and over that after about 30k the KO2s aren’t great in the wet. A few guys said they were fine but enough said they weren’t for me to shop around.

 

Btw, walmart had an rollback and price mis-mark on Yokohama Geolanders. I just picked up a set of 5 (the spare was old) Yokohama Geolander G015 AT's in 265/75/16 load range E for $118 a piece total $750 OTD. It's normally $192/ea and I had my local America's Tire price match.

The Load E is for my full sized 1/2 ton rig. Saved me a chunck of $. I think it's still on the walmart website.

 

I have General Grabber AT2s and love them. Saved a lot of $$$ over the KO2s. Mine are on 16” stock TRD/OR rims. With the 17” sema wheels you can get the ATX which have a more aggressive sidewall and save $$$. Tread pattern is similar to the KO2.

 

I had KO2s for years, switched to Nitto Ridge Grapplers and will definitely do Nittos again. I think they look more aggressive and do better when its wet out.

 

I've had (2 sets of) STT PROs. Duratracs..
Geolanders....KM2S....and more. I WAS anti-KO2... Then on a whim, I put KO2s on for several long road trips.

They are now a perminent feature on my truck. They wear great. They are MUCH quieter. Gas mileage is better than a mud tire. The truck is more "user friendly".

And they do pretty damn well off road.

There is a good reason KO2s are so damn popular.
