It only does this while rolling?
I ask because the 4.0 have a tick to engine while running.
It can sound like a CV, I believe it has to do with the VVT system.

    Just search “Tacoma Tick”

So I mentioned two noises in my original post, probably confusing. Lets stick with the ticking one. Yes, directly related to rotation of the wheels, always. It doesn't come and go, just varies with speed. (Ill get to the other clanking noise later, but I have seen the radiator support issues, and that may be the source of my other noises).

I will have to look this up. Thanks.

Definitely not that. Directly related to wheel rotation.

I do know what you are referring to though, they all have that tick. I've come to embrace that one LOL

Pretty sure they have 2 in them from the factory.
I haven’t seen any with just 1 in them?

Good tip on the grease. That is often over looked.

mine had 1 factory. pretty sure they are 1 factory. thats why there are numerous threads about adding second calipers pin as a mod.

    maybe im wrong.

edit: i meant 1 caliper spring (anti rattle spring) ... not pin

Thought about swapping tires from front to rear? What if there is a lump in the tread from a potential separation causing the sound? Swapping front to rear can isolate if its tires or drivetrain at least.

So did your tires get balanced and rotated recently and do you have stock rims ? I had the same sound and found that when the tire shop re balanced one of my wheels they had one of the weights a bit taller than the others and it would just hit the caliper each time it rotated . Took me a day to figure it out but just took it back in and they fixed the issue . Sounded just like what you described

Different vehicle, but the only CVs I’ve had go out caused a pretty harsh grinding that rapidly devolved into a visibly trashed CV joint. I lost one on one side and a few months later lost the other side, so I recognized what it was. On that S-10 Blazer, it was not a click.

Thanks for the wealth of info and ideas!

Didn't get to much this weekend. Back to school for the wife, spent lots of time helping in her classroom and watching the kiddo.

It sounds like an indicator of this problem is that it goes away when put into 4WD? I have zero change in sound when I switch into 4WD. I will investigate some more though.

I just recently rotated tires, and I thought I remember hearing the noise before rotation, but it wasn't as obvious as it is now. So you may be on to something. The tire that is making the sound would have been on the rear passenger. I would definitely not have noticed the sound as much back there. Now that it is right up by my driver window, its much more prevalent?? This may be my next course of action...

Check to make sure the wheel weights are not hitting the calipers . It is a real tight fit between the caliper and the inside of the stock 16" rim

Front licence plate is loose, or the license plate holder is loose flapping in the wind at speed?
