Batch #2 In stock as of 9/10.

    How to Order
    Product availability through my website.

    Product Description
Getting tired of having to manually drop your tailgate with the handle? Look no further this module plugs into OEM wiring and with 3 pushes of the unlock signal the tailgate will open like magic! With the optional push button harness (coming soon), it will also allow you to open via a dash mounted push button! Because who needs handles anyway?

    20190820_185312.jpg

This module is built on a Custom PCB / Arduino Nano platform. The enclosure is 3D printed and there are two connectors/wire harnesses that serve two purposes listed below.

    20190820_190819.jpg

    A-Harness (3x Unlock Functionality)

Included with the module connects into your OEM wiring and provides Power, Ground, Unlock, and Actuator signals. It hooks directly into the OEM T-Harness (Sold Separately by KTJO4x4) for full plug n play installation.

    20190820_180920.jpg

B-Harness <Optional> (Push Button Functionality and Interlocks)

The optional B-Harness will be available in a few weeks. With the added B-Harness there are four wires (Push Button In, Push Button Out, Park Signal, and IGN Signal.) With this harness installed it allows for a dash mounted push button to be used that is fully interlocked to prevent unwanted openings of the tailgate while driving. The interlocks are as follows and when installed are applicable to both the 3x unlock and push button openings:

    · If Ignition is ON and Park is ON, then allow to open.

    · If Ignition is ON and Park is OFF, then DO NOT OPEN.

    · If ignition is OFF, then allow to open.

This module is a part of a plug n play kit offered by another member of TacomaWorld forum @KTJO 4x4 . You need this module and the kit offered in the link below. The kit below provides all the Plug N Play wiring for the actuator and a mounting bracket for the actuator that will live inside the tailgate. There is NO DRILLING REQUIRED.
Please take a look at this kit before you order HERE.

As of 11/15 piezo has been added.

    Back Story
I had two requirements. 1) Make it fully plug n play. 2) Create interlocks that will not allow accidental openings while driving. I partnered with @ktjo4x4 to make #1 happen. Her pop n lock oem T-Harness she was already making already had all of the inputs I needed to make this work and have the module mounted in the cab. She added the extra leads that I needed (12V+ Constant, Ground, Unlock Signal). She was also already providing the wires heading back to the tailgate to the actuator for her pop n lock mod. So simply adding 2 wires to that harness and the wires I needed were accounted for. Next there was the question of how to mount the actuator in the tailgate. The tailgate latch rod requires a bit extra force to pull, so the angle and method of mounting an actuator had to be spot on. @tacodnr came up with a flawless NO DRILL bracket that sits the actuator perfectly for my module to control. This project started off with a simple TR7 and Relay setup with an actuator I had laying around that I clamped to the tailgate. I’ve been busy since the first prototype in an effort to start offering this mod to everyone interested.

You are probably wondering… V2? Already? What happened to V1? Well V1 was built on a custom pcb platform with 3 relays. 2 Signal Relays and 1 Power Relay. The signal relays were set up to handle the interlocks portion with some simple Relay Logic, while the TR7 module was handling the 3x unlock. This was a bit tricky to put into a small enclosure neatly with two boards. I had some time to kill while I awaited some supplies from overseas to start making these things. So I set out to take a crack at a V2 via Arduino. V2 is built on an Arduino Nano / Custom PCB Platform. Code handles the logic of 3x unlock and the interlocks. Effectively nixing the need for the TR7 and the two signal relays. This shrunk the size of the enclosure and allowed for more versatility on my end. For instance, I came to find out that if someone were to try a latched style push button on V1 and accidently left it on it would burn up the actuator within minutes. In V2 I accounted for this and only allow a 2 second pull of the actuator on a latched signal until the button is recycled again. Its been a long road to this point, but I/we are finally ready to get this product out there.

    Installation Instructions

    <Install video in progress>

Step 1: With T-Harness UNPLUGGED connect A-Harness to KTJO's T-Harness and Integrated Harness (for the actuator) following the diagram in post #2.

    IMG_5218.jpg

    588199553.jpg

Step 2: Hook up TailGate Opener module while still UNPLUGGED from the truck. The white connector can only be connected fully one way. If you were to hook it up upside down while still plugged in it is possible to damage the board inside. (The cable will be shipped connected in the correct orientation for reference). It is crucial to make sure the A-Harness is not upside down. Please follow the pictures below for reference.

    Two_CorrectInstall.jpg

    Three_CorrectInstall.jpg

    IMG_20190907_131032_02_01.jpg

Step 3: As far as the Module is concerned you are done. The rest is KTJOs Kit for installation of the T-Harness, Integrated (Actuator) Harness, Bracket, and actuator. You can find her instructions
    HERE.

Step 4: Check that your Radio Settings match the below picture. Else the module will likely work with 4x Unlock instead of 3x.

    Radio_Settings.jpg

    Step 5: TEST

Installation of this complete kit is very straightforward however if any issues arise during installation of the TailGate Opener Module please refer to the Trouble-Shooting information below. If you try the steps below and still have issues please contact me at dsim.solutions@gmail.com OR shoot me a PM.

    Trouble-Shooting

Step 1: Pop open the enclosure. Check and make sure there is a red led on indicating that the arduino board is on.

    LED is ON.
    GOOD. Continue To Step 2.

    LED NOT ON
BAD. Continue To Step 2 to try a reset.

Step 2: Unplug A-Harness. Led should turn off.

LED should be off in ALL Scenarios.

Step 3: Plug it back in to reset the module. Led should be on.

    Red LED is ON
    GOOD. Continue To Step 4.

    LED NOT ON

Power Issue. Check red and black wires on the A-Harness, and where the connections are to the T-Harness. Follow the Diagram in Post #2.

Step 4: Press unlock 4 times. There should be another led on the arduino that should blink with each unlock press (TX LED). After the TX blinks 3 times you should audibly hear the relay on the board "Click".

TX LED only Blinked 3 Times on 4 unlock presses.
Radio Settings. Check to make sure your radio setting match post #2. Else you will need to hit unlock 4 times to activate the tailgate opening event.

TX LED Blinked 4 Times on 4 unlock presses.
GOOD. Your Radio Settings are configured for 3x Tailgate Open

The TX LED did not blink at all
GOOD. Your Radio Settings are configured for 3x Tailgate Open

The TX LED blinked, but the Relay DID NOT CLICK
BAD. Restart at Step 1 and try again. If this does not work after another reset then its possible the arduino output pin was shorted during installation. You will need a replacement arduino (Contact dsim.solutions@gmail.com or PM me here on TW

The TX LED blinked, the Relay Clicked, but the actuator did not move.
At this point the module is doing what it should be doing. Check actuator wires to make sure they are properly connected. Power is being sent from the Module but its not making it to the actuator or the actuator is not grounded.

The TX LED blinked, the Relay Clicked, Actuator Moved, but TailGate did not drop
Adjustment instructions are under construction, pics and better verbage to come but heres the basics. Minor adjustments may need to be made to the latch on the bed side. The latch on the bed side is set up on a slotted hole, try loosening and adjusting the latch and retightening. You can also try removing the rubber stops. If you remove the rubber stops and that works then try shaving 1/8" off of the rubber stops.

would it be possible to set it up as "press and hold" unlock to open? only reason i ask is because i have the 12volt auto start. and if the car is already started, pressing unlock three times turns it off. i'm sure the scenario where the car is started and i need to open the tailgate might be slim, but there's always that chance.

Well you can always just get the switch and press it once and the tailgate opens!!! ;)

Here is the Momentary Switch I had made that @DSIM will be selling with this module.

Press and hold would not work for the 3x unlock on the fob. But I can play around with the programming. For instance I can program it to disable 3x unlock when ignition is on pretty easily or alter the number of pulses to initiate the open sequence. This would solve your problem I think. When/if you order when it opens up PM me, be happy to work it out for you. Coding is fun.
