Fitting a large tweet or coaxial in the dash(3rd gen) - who's done it?

Ive been looking at that same JL amp, but just done have the space for it plus another amp for my sub.

So I had a lot of time to think about this.

1. I have a fantastic amp, and think I just want to stick with that.

2. The CCWR254 I put in the dash are great, but I can tell there is something missing. There just isn't enough detail at the top end and I don't get enough vocal from them.

3. I would love to do a three way stage up front, but I think it's going to cost too much to just add 2 speakers.

4. Would I be better off perhaps getting a 3-1/2 coaxial speaker set on the dash and run the front active off of my existing amp, and remover the rears all together?

Perhaps I'm just unsure of what I am looking for.

 

Dont give up your dreams, take your time and do it piece by piece. I started with 2 way, added the mids, then added another amp and the dsp. You dont need to do everything all at the same time. Mine took about a month or so to all come together, but its better to get what you want the first time around rather than having to rebuy things you should of gotten the first time.

Get some tweeters, mount them in the sail panels, then when your ready get the dsp and extra amp you need to run full active.

 

How are you running these? I think this is the solution I'm looking for.

 

It's not giving up per say, more like being a realist. I don't want to chase that last 10%.

I think a good set of small reference coaxial speakers for the dash and a DSP like minidsp or Dayton audio, and I can tune it. Take out the rears and be good to go.

That Arc amp is fantastic and clean. I don't want to move away from it, and I think I can get want I want out of the dash with the coaxial. Now to find a set that isn't $700....

In the meantime, I got my hands on a set of Kove KXS3.2 that I'm going to play with when they come in.

Seems pretty wacky to me.

No band-pass filter for the mid, 1kHz HPF only, or at least that's what I think this statement implies: "The midrange is allowed to crossover to the tweeter based on the midrange’s natural character."

On a side note, I was cruising through FB and saw an add on the Sound Quality Classifieds page with 2 sets of Kove KXS32s 3.5" coaxials.

I bought both sets (because why not, they were dirt cheap with great specs). Gonna stuff them in the dash.

 

Did you get these speakers to work for you?

I'm still messing with the Kenwoods I put in my dash. I ended up running a dedicated circuit up there so now the dash & doors are fully active. SQ has really improved, mostly because the levels are now matched, but the low efficiency of the Kenwoods still has my little Pioneer DSP/amp maxed-out. I'm still running the factory door speakers (yeah...I know) which, as it turns out, are far more efficient than the Kenwoods. I actually had to turn down the door speakers 6dB for an even match.

 

Let's say yes, but no.

They don't quite fit, there needs to be just a little bit of trimming done.

They definitely need to be bi-amped, I'm working on that solution.

I have a campout the next 2 weekends so it will be a little while.

I'm still going to prepare for putting tweeters in sail panels though...

 

What could possibly go wrong?

 

I'm gonna run these as is right now. They completely opened up the 2-1/2" wide range drivers and it sounds great...

So now I'm totally up in the air with what I am going to do with my dash.

I set them up in 2-way mode, utilizing the mid-tweeter output, shutting off the tweeter output.



I set the crossover like this:

HDR1 - (woofer) Medium
HDR2 - (mid) setting second from highest
HDR3 - (tweeter) lowest setting
HDR4 - Low
HDR5 - 2nd order

The Morel CCWR264s have life! Holy crap. We compared the morel crossovers to the CDT and there is really a HUGE difference in the front stage. Much more crisp and full while staying warm.

I'm going to roll like this for a while before deciding whether or not to go forward with the coaxials on the dash or tweeters in the sail panels.

3. Morel CCWR 254 Widebands (using as tweeters in OEM dash location)
   40w Rms, 300-19,000 hz range
4. Morel Tempo Ultra 6x9 woofer drivers in door130w Rms, 50-3200 Hz range
5. CDT MX1000SX passive crossovers
6. Morel Tempo Ultra 602 Integra (rear doors)
   

What I have on hand:

1. Morel Tempo Ultra tweeters
2. Morel Tempo Ultra crossovers

What is on the way

1. JL 12TW3-D8
   400w Rms, 24 - 200 hz range
2. Mr. Marv box for said subwoofer

The Kenwood has settings for active crossover, time alignment, volume adjustment etc. The AudioControl has the ability for HP from 500-5Khz on Ch 1/2 (tweeters), HP and LP on Ch 3/4 (woofer drivers), and LP for 5/6 (@4ohm bridged - subwoofer).



Plan:

1. wire CCWR254s in Ch 1/2, set HP at 3000
2. wire Morel 6x9 to channel 3/4, set HP at 90, LP at 3000
3. remove Morel 602s from rear doors - install in son's car
4. wire JL sub bridged channel 5/6, set LP at 100 (ish)

Solid plan?

 

Is there anything comparable to the Illusion Audio? I just can't stomach the price tag....

But I still want to put something in the dash. The Morel widebands were lacking on the high end, and the Morel Tempo Ultra tweets are lacking in the low end.

Everything is through a MiniDsp and AC LC6.1200

 

There is plenty of options compared to the illusions, hybrid audio wideband work great up there, the kenwood 3.5 coax works surprisingly well in that dash, hertz wideband, audio frog, jl c7, just to a few and I’ve installed all of them and all work well of tuned and set up properly
