What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

It really is super useful. I’ve got plenty of tools to smack things, but when you need pulling force a slide hammer is hard to beat

And nice job lining up the retainer! The grease method is what I ended up doing and no leaks so far

 

I wasted hating on you for it I appreciate your efforts. I've been looking at getting ride of my Dell's and I've looked at different threads is confusing.....or I'm really tired.

 

You could just look at the wiring diagram for your truck specific to your year...

 

Personally, I'd move the collar/abs ring up just a smidge. That's a little close for comfort. I tried to have mine ride the absolute center of the flat part of the ring. But who knows you might be fine too lol. I know the last time I did mine (the first one) it started leaking again in a day or two because it was too close to the bevel.

I see you flipped the retainer? I always liked that concept too, but I know the retainer has a bevel on it to hopefully keep the retainer from damaging the seal on install.

 

Yeah, I don’t think it really matters so long as you get the retainer located correctly. I was super careful during the grease test and final install and it turned out fine. If (when?) the time comes to replace the seals again, I’ll leave the chamfer toward the seal just to be safe. Again, as long as the seal is riding in the middle of that face on the retainer, you’re golden.

 

Does the seal really move that much? On the retainer it was riding on previously, it really seemed to wear in a single location. I figured that 4/6mm on the retainer was probably OK. I mean, if anything, pressure in the diff will push it outboard slightly, right?

It was fine the first time, and I wouldn't flip the rings.

 

I just know when I did mine the first time around back in 2016, this leaked. His is obviously more centered than this pic, but not by much.



Also @turbodb were you running a flipped retainer the whole time? It's hard to tell in the first photo.

 

The tapers just there so you don’t tear the seal up installing the axle. If your careful putting the axle in you should be fine

 

So i put these supposedly black anodized bolts I got from shore metals in the fender holes a couple days ago and they are already rusting....

 

Are you sure they are anodized? I don't think they are.

 

What I am getting at is I believe they are steel bolts that are black oxide coated. These types of bolts are all rusty on my motorcycle, which is why I replace the aftermarket bolts like these with ones that are corrosion resistant and put looks aside.

 

stock 16" rims, has anybody gone up a tire size? thinking i can grab another inch of lift.
