If you can afford a replacement ECU and a TRD tune, do it. It’s smog legal in CA and Toyota 101 in Redwood City will do exactly that.

Do you know about how much it is to do this versus going the HPTuners MPVI2 route? I’m in DEEP already and I just want my truck back.

I just want something that will put me back on the road and build my confidence back with this truck. This has been worse than my “worst case scenario” nightmares when I bought the SC in a group buy on here.

I don’t know what their cost was. But you would need to talk to Curt Peterson. He can and will get it done for you.

Running the 2.3 for just a touch under 2 years now. I guess you can say that I've been living dangerously for quite a while. ;)

If I already have the BD tune installed, this thing will be able to edit it? It’s been forever since I’ve been on here, but the last I remember reading is that I’m stuck with that file on the ECU.

I’m down to pull the trigger on it, I’m just not familiar with it as I’ve been off this site for awhile now. Looks like I should have jumped on here awhile ago and maybe I could have already had a drivable truck.

The TRD Tune in conjunction with the TRD Supercharger is perfect CARB legal and approved for running on the Tacoma. There is even a PDF file which has an EO # and a very detailed/ accurate description of what is supposed to be on the TRD supercharger. I suggest getting the TRD Tune then switching over to HPT and asking our resident tuner guru JustDSM for some assistance getting you tuned and dialed in to take advantage of a much better running version of the TRD Tune so you can take full advantage of the blower and be trouble/ hassle free for years and years to come. Smog doesn't know the difference between a modified tune and one that is not. Their only job is to check for codes and visually ensure that everything looks on the up and up and is plugged in correctly.

    I hope this helps.

It definitely does help! Thank you for taking the time to reply! So since I already have the BullyDog installed, does this plan require me to get a new ECU to accept the TRD tune?

The "virtual read process" that HPTuners uses, looks up the Calibration ID and supplies a virgin copy of the Toyota tune for that Calibration ID. Since the BD tune converts the ECU to a TRD Calibration ID (with BD specific tune), the HPTuners read process will read it as a TRD calibration. As such, you'll get the virgin copy of the TRD tune, which can be flashed back into the truck. You'll also be able to enhance the TRD tune from that point forward should you wish too.

It's my understanding that, once you have flashed the BD tune to the truck, you can no longer go back to a stock TRD tune via the dealer (using Techstream). If that's incorrect, someone please correct me.

However, using the HPT MPVI2, you can get yourself back to a stock TRD tune, saving you the cost/hassle of getting another ECU to flash to TRD spec.

Just for curiosity, have you tried the fuel pressure regulator mod (aka FPR mod)? Its free and simple way of boost referencing fuel.

Remove the fpr hose from the intake tube and tee it into your boost port. Cap the intake port. See what that does for you. I'd recommend keeping the mod installed.

Wow guys you’re help has been amazing. You’ve provided more answers in 20 minutes than BullyDog has in 2 months. I’ll be buying the HPT MPV12 tonight.

It's not mandatory. Especially if you're just trying to get your truck back on the road. If you want to really dial the truck in, you'll eventually need it. It can be added at any time though.

As for "CARB" legal get your sticker from Magnuson if you haven't already.
They don't ship the S/C with the sticker. You have to email them with your VIN and BullyDog serial number to get the sticker.

That will get you past visual inspection.
