Other than tires I drove it the first 18 months before I decided to change anything regarding suspension, drive train is stock.

A sink? Not sure I understand what you mean. A modded third gen will be a bigger sink in the long run lol.

 

A money sink. Anymore if you buy and build a 1gen then you’re basically committing to owning it for life because the buyer pool is so slim. I can sell a properly built 3rd gen in 3 years when I’m bored with it and MAYBE stand to do fairly well on the sale and not be out a ton. The total loss in money will be substantially less based on what I want out of the trucks.

i had exactly the same experience when i got the truck and came super close to selling it within weeks. that's after waiting about 6 months to get it. (first MT 3g Pro delivered in TX).

first i got a Pedal Commander as a band aid simply to be able to drive the thing. it was nearly undriveable for a MT vehicle. that was ok, not great. then OVT came out with the alpha tune. huge improvement. not enough.

now I'm on OVT 2.0 dump tube test file 93oct (looks like the highest performing file released so far... imo), and i have put about $2k into custom exhaust work and I'm just getting started with it. the right exhaust (custom here, nothing off the shelf) takes OVT to a real level and my motor seems to perform better than anyone around here who always have something to find for complaining. i just have no complaints, runs amazing, strong, and consistent. it was not so strong before i got the exhaust right. and that's about to get better. but keep in mind, i run light and no big tires, so under 1800rpm isn't a problem, and i habitually spin up the revs for first & second.

to make all this come together i did the ADM, Core shifter, and a bunch of suspension and chassis work. so i could hook right into the power without slop.

if i ran 35's and 2,000lbs add'l weight of course I'd have a complaint. but for my setup it's great.

i am watching the FI stuff and will likely go TT down the line when i overhaul the truck in maybe 100k miles and go some version of LT. but for now i am really enjoying NA. i fly this thing at 90 all over the place easily. on private roads of course.

 

I think you and I must have the same interests. I’m looking to do about the exact same thing + mid travel setup. That’s exactly what I wanna know. I am looking to do the same thing. Remove any restrictions through intake and exhaust to increase the performance through efficiency and tune it properly. After that, enjoy. I’m glad to hear you’re happy with it.

So I’m basically adding 2k to the price for initial modz. I don’t have time to build anything at the moment, who’s parts would you use if you didn’t make yours?

 

Totally agree with you man. 3rd gen is quicker than 2nd for sure. It makes me laugh when people say 3rd gen has no low end torque and have to floor it to drive normally. Wtf really?? Look at the numbers guys...
At high rpms 4.0 wasnt that great, i drove one.

90% of time i dont go over 3k rpm, even on slight hills i can climb in 4th at around 2k-2.5k rpm without lugging engine at all. If i floor it, my truck flies. My engine is completely stock. I only had to floor it to get out of an interesction or when im racing someone, i really dont understand wtf they are talking about. They must be coming out of 350 v8s or some small sports cars.

I really dont get where these people are coming from ... tacoma was never a racing machine.

 

I wouldn’t say the truck is slow, but it’s not fast either. Sort of like every other Toyota I’ve owned. I had a van for several years that did van stuff very well, but definitely wasn’t winning any street races. Same with the Corolla wagon I bought from a church auction for 400 bucks. Hauled stuff but didn’t haul ass. Now, I use the truck for trucking stuff and it’s the same thing. Depends on what you use it for I guess. Including pics pulled from the net of the Toyota models (and color!) mentioned for reference

 

i am deep in detail over here. i can't point to parts and say get these it will work. it's about the whole setup package working together right down to the tires on my truck. you can pm me about it. i am basically on my own stage 2 exhaust and am about to go boldly into stage 3 with a custom tuned Y pipe and some other stuff including the original OV prototype high flow cat dump tubes. Roostfactor is doing the work after i chased him down a bit.

honestly this truck has so much potential it's nuts. never had such a fun vehicle in my life everywhere i go, and it keeps getting better.

I’ve had my 3rd Gen for nearly 2 years now, and I’ve encountered exactly ZERO instances of me needing it to be “fast”.

 

I’ll keep my eye on you for sure. I know what you mean too. It’s not possible to just blurt out “get x, y, z; go fast”. There’s more to it. I’m looking to dabble in performance engineering some too so maybe I can learn a thing or two on the application side and apply it to the book/math side by keeping up with what you’re doing.

I go 500 mph every time I go to work. And I START that work day by going faster than you’ve ever fathomed going in a vehicle. It’s not a “me” problem.
