I am wanting to buy a tonneau cover for my Tacoma and think I should go for a hard top tonneau. I like the security and look of these bed covers. I have a older friend of mine that told me to stay away from the hard type and stick with the soft tops. He says the hard covers cause bad scratching damage on the corners of the bed.

Anyone know of this happening and if it is significant damage? Should I stay away from the hard top tonneau bed covers?

    Huh?
The hard cover has a soft seal, and that seal mates on the bed's composite cap.

Edit: I'm referring to the folding covers BTW. I'm not sure on the piece (tilt up), under never had any desire for one of those silly things, BUT, I'm sure they're made to fit.

IF they sit on some type of seal, they shouldn't rub much on the plastic bed rail covers. If they sit fiberglass/plastic on the plastic bed rails then it probably will rub.

That being said, if it's going to be covered by a bed cover, does it really matter much?

I think it depends on which make and model.

I have the Extang Solid-Fold 2.0 and it's almost 4 years old. No damage. When I finally get rid of it there will be no sign that it was even there. Highly recommend.

Solid tri fold, extang 2.0 been on there for 3 years zero damage. Couldn’t even see how it could be possible to do any damage.

Most of the folding covers should be fine as they don't really touch the truck per say so much as just their attachment points. However the one piece tonneau covers that hinge open (think pac man) can scratch it up. Ask my dad's tundra about that. Fuck those things.

Thanks for all the info! I am considering the Extang Encore Tonneau tri-fold cover. I like that it also opens at the cab side. I am confident that these latest covers and tech are carefully designed to not damage the truck.

Do you all have led lights mounted under the cover?

Looks like it's an issue with this particular model of cover only - the solid-folds seal flush at the top. I'm also betting that this rubbing would happen with a topper as well - if it overlaps the bed and rests against the paint it'll have a chance to rub.

For that price, you can get a quickly removable tri-fold that gives you greater flexibility with load options.

I think your buddy is thinking of old school trucks with bed sides that don’t have covers on the rail portion, cause yeah sure. In our trucks who cares. It’s a plastic piece that can be replaced if needed.

That Silverado had an interior bed liner that also comes over the rails like our trucks' composite beds. Looks like the lip of that particular cover extended beyond it onto the paint.

Yep. I was wondering if he could simply trim the lip up even with the composite rail.

    :sawzall:

Seems a waste to have to trim something you spent $900 on after tax and shipping.

The way it’s designed I bet it would no longer be water resistant if cut lol.
