My 2020 Tacoma is en route

I am primary getting it for integrated CarPlay. There’s a (work) reason for that. I’ll spare the details though this is a decision worth it to me.

Also, you are correct; there are some great aftermarket options and I seriously considered that route, before I knew the 2020s would ship with updated software.

 

Not hating! For some people its not going to make sense. Could you explain to me how integrated carplay is different from putting it in yourself with a new head unit? This is the first vehicle I have had with carplay, so I am curious what additional features I am missing out on with a car that has carplay as an "oem" installation.

 

The CarPlay experience between one vehicle and another should be similar. What changes is the base software it is running on (Entune 3.0). Things like the iPhone and Apple Watch Remote Connect app by Toyota for remote start and diagnostics is something that requires OEM base software.

 

And not to mention you lose the flush, clean look of the OEM radio. I haven't liked the look of just about any aftermarket headunits I've seen installed.

 

I know its subjective and I'm biased because it is mine but I think the one I installed looks and fits really well. Here is a pic.

 

They are getting better all the time. That said, the 2020 Taco cockpit is very nicely done while still feeling all truck.

It doesn't look bad, I just don't like the adapter that has to be used, leaving the black border on the side.

Same here. I don't like how the typical brands have the adapter. It makes sense so they can fit multiple vehicles. I'll probably do one of these Joying ones next year. Several threads to research these things in audio video subforum.

 

Read the fine print and ask someone if it's true but I doubt you want to lose rear OEM camera with the Joying, and note that you now rely on it's Bluetooth mic input (based on where you route/hide it) for clarity. Might want to research it's noise cancellation/anti-feedback capabilities....straight from their website:

Don't forget, you'll need the Can-bus adapter from them to retain steering wheel controls.

The picture I posted clearly shows the Corolla model installed as well. You don't use the universal model that has offset issues or whatever. I have seen bracket modifications needed for the Corolla model.

It does support the OEM rear camera.

It uses a microphone on the face of the unit so no running another one up on your headliner. Most say it works fine.

It uses its own GPS antenna, but some people have made their own harness to use the OEM one.

Who cares if you need a canbus adapter to retain steering wheel controls? No different than a maestro.

The Corolla model does support Carplay. Might have to buy an adapter. I don't really know because I use Android, therefore don't care how Carplay works.

The JBL systems seem to have issues with compatibility. I don't have JBL so not paying attention to that.

In any event, there are other units in that thread as well.

Its probably not as good as a 2020 OEM unit. And who knows if it sends data to China. Tons of things do. Make a new gmail account to use on it that isn't your own personal. I don't know. Misinformation is unnecessary. I'd rather someone at least be able to research the option instead of being shot down without being informed.

If I were getting ready to buy a Tacoma now, I'd get a 2020 over a 2019.

 

Having installed a fair amount of vehicle electronics over the years, and also running a mobile ham radio, there is always less interference and issue with OEM install. I’m really looking forward to NOT messing with electronics on this one...outside a ham radio install.

 

Arrived at the dealer yesterday and I’m supposed to take possession on Friday when I’m back in town. Initial install will include:

- General Grabber ATx tires in 265/75/R16
- BAK Revolver X4 tonneau cover
- Bed mat
- WeatherTech window deflectors and hood protector
- Heated seats (aftermarket installed)

Her maiden voyage will likely be Lake of The Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains this weekend. Next week, scheduling permitting, the Yaesu FTM-400 (ham radio) from my previous truck will get installed.

Or just wait until late summer of next year when dealers will be clearing out 2020s and offering more reasonable deals. Right now is the worst time to buy a 2020.

 

Not necessarily a universal statement. I did get a deal. The built in software was important to me (more than one would probably imagine). And, I had a good friend who needed to replace his first gen Tacoma and wanted and appreciated the value of the modifications to my 2010.
