Auto vs. Standard?

Hi, I've decided to buy a Tacoma but am having trouble deciding which model. I live in Wisconsin (it snows a lot and I have a quarter mile driveway) I plan to do some off-road driving but also a lot of traveling/car camping. I'm wondering what people's thoughts on 4x4 vs 4x2 and auto vs standard are. Thanks!

 

4x4 is a must where you are. For the manual trans depends.

Auto- IMO- Better gas mileage- Will handle anything a stick can- Several have complained about squeaks and poor fuel mileage with sticks (probably related to gearing). Although, have had a few issues with Auto trans. Mostly shifting/lagging issues. Easy enough fix because it's electronic, there is a dealer TSB to fix that.
As to handling in winter weather, seems to do as well as the next truck. Just make sure you put a bit of weight in the truck.
Do make sure to get some decent tires. The stock ones are crap.

There's times I wish I had a auto, but I like the standard.

 

Manual for sure...much better control of the vehicle. Automatics are for lazy people.

 

I have an automatic but like driving standard.

 

Unless things have changed for 2010/11, regular cabs PreRunners/4WD's only come with a 5spd manual (in the current body style). Only 5 lug small chassis regular cabs come with automatic as an option. The previous body style did have automatic with the PreRunner, but I think a manual was all that was available with reg cab 4wd's with 4cyls, I cant remember if regular cab V6's were ever built, and if so what driveline pkgs were offered.

 

No..they are for Sport Cars and Cheap versions of other Vehicles.

I love my AUTO on the Tacoma DC.. Loved stick all the 7-8 years I drove my M3s. It's like riding a bike, you never forget. I'll have a stick again someday soon.

 

I have a 1st gen regular cab V6 but I dont think they ever made one in the 2nd gens.
