Not much love here for 32's either! I think 32" is the perfect size for the Tacoma. Larger and no cutting required.

 

Honestly, I didn’t know 285/70/16 was even an available size. I know guys roll on 275/70/17, which is also (loosely) a 32”.

 

There are not a lot of tire options in this size. I decided I didn't really want a taller tire as much as I wanted a wider tire.

No such thing as a P/SL rated 275 that I have heard of, is there ?

 

I have not found one in a 275 which is an odd ball sized tire. Hard to get one in a day when you need it was a big disappointment to me.

I don’t know of any. A few guys were hoping BFG would release a 275/70/17 in c-rated as the e-rated in that size are a heavy tire.

 

It would be nice to see, I looked at them briefly but tossed the idea when they were all LT's. Ran Grabber AT2's in a 265 LT on my 2nd Gen and found them very very rough, would get use to it eventually till I swapped back to my winters on steelies and then it would ride like a Cadi and then back to the summer chuck wagon.

Of course an inch matters. Go ride rocks and of the dozens you hit, many of those would clear with an inch. Every inch you add clears more. Which inch doesn't matter?

 

Sure, every inch matters. But how many times is it the difference between making it off the trail and not? My point is only that its not THAT big of a difference. Our truck in the stock configuration is capable enough to get through some pretty gnarly trails, it just wont get to the end as fast as a modified truck. At some point, you have to ask yourself if its worth the expense and trade-offs. OP started this thread to say "31s are good enough" and I chimed in to say "yeah, you are right."

 

He is right, theres very few people who can settle and be happy with what they have nowadays. Tires is just the beginning to a very viscous cycle. the guys being conservative with the new Tacos are probably the same fellows who are gonna retire without a flinch. The guys begging to stuff 285's are the ones working till their funerals put off till their shift ends.

I completely agree @Stocklocker ! When I got my truck I figured first thing I would have to do so I could go off-roading with my buddy’s was lift and 35’s but I still have never gone anywhere that I feel bigger tires would of made the difference. I don’t do anything extreme but I do some nice washouts and minor crawling. I think until I run out of all my warranty 265-75-16’s are perfect. Then I will decide the Tacos true fate. I’m getting a FJ soon and that will be getting 35’s and a big lift so I might just keep the Tacoma on 265’s and enjoy the ride just maybe a small lift and upgrade the shocks to handle the armours weight. I love the look of how my truck sits but do need to upgrade to something more aggressive. 265 love here!

 

I retired at 41 and run 265/70s and in fact I'm getting ready to do a lift, tires and wheels, pro exhaust and CAI and a pro skid plate my son's 18 Tacoma. Not because he can't afford it on his own, it's because he is an awesome son and because I can. He can have 285s but he is sensible enough to know what's practical for him and his needs. If you want to run 285s go for it, hell I might go to them if my needs ever change but for now I'm happy with what I have, they look great too. We all wish we had another inch!

Buy what is practical, seriously it was a great govt job and got full retirement.
