On paper yes but there’s no telling your axle is goin to break. If I were you I’d use it and upgrade if and when things break.
FYI, if you get one of those coveted TRD E-locker axles you’ll likely save a LOT of money over the expense of open axle plus ARB.
With the ARB you will also need an air compressor that will need 12v or just wire 12v to the elocker instead. Just something to ponder. I always prefer the route that needs less parts so there’s less that can fail

But from what I read, nobody has been able to wire the OEM e-locker to a non OR. Is that what you are saying to do?

Yes that is what I’m saying. Check out this thread:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2017-e-locker.585669/page-5

Guy did it very meticulously so you don’t have to blaze trail.
Probably could do it simpler with just a relay and a switch also.

I was following that thread a bit until it got complex with controllers trying to mimic the OEM signals. Did the whole thing simplify down to a single resistor? I don't see much jumping out between the processor design then just pics of a resistor.

Air lines are easy. The only place it would leak internally is the Oring which can be replaced. Keep PSI at or below 100 and nonLSD fluid. I’ve read where the LSD additive compromises the rubber rings.

The OEM method was for reliable and consistent engagement and disengagement according to the patent.. realistically giving it 12v will work there might just be times where it will take longer to engage and disengage

Sweet! With coming to a full stop and waiting with 4Lo, waiting on a locker would be no big deal.

    Ideas!

There are no 2 wheel drive MT's in the 3rd Gen.

You can get a Sport Manual, but only in 4x4, Sport 4x2 are all AT.

Just read through this thread and wanted to add a couple thoughts.

    1. Yes, all manuals have the 8.8” diff, and yes, all manuals are 4WD.
    2. The 8.8” rear ends do not share the same axles. The 8.0” axles are still the same though (2005-2020).
    3. The e-locker in the 2016+ 8.8” axle is probably the easiest to wire up factory e-locker from Toyota ever. It literally just needs power and ground to lock unlike most other factory lockers which have position switches and controllers. Yes there is some logic in the factory setup to determine when it will let you lock up, but if we’re talking about retrofitting a locker, wiring up the 8.8” e-locker is easier than any aftermarket locker on the market I am aware of.
8.8” axles are available with 3.91:1 ratio with locker (TRD OR/Pro AT) and 4.30:1 with (TRD OR/Pro MT) or without locker (L4 and V6 MT)

Good summary. Harrop locker is just as easy because it’s also just an electro magnet but not yet available for the 8.75 axle but I have it in my 8.4

That bit is interesting, and now that you say it, it has been there all along.

It’s dumb. TRD sport should be 2wd MT

I'm a bit confused about that post (I have no room to talk though :D ). 4x4 Sports are pretty common. Seeing 2wd around here is rare though.

Also, no MT SR5s these days and no SR MTs after 2017.

Sorry, but no. Xrunner, sure. The Sport is the only way to get a LB MT. If there was an OR LB MT, I would have gone that route though.

That is the truth. For an MT, you have to grab what it available. I was happy that I had three LB MTs to choose from when looking.

It was harder looking for a used 2nd Gen LB 4x4 MT. The few that I could find at the time were either SR or Sport.
