Considering re-gearing. Anybody know what kind of shop, other than a dealer, can re-program the speedo, & appx. how much should it cost to get the speedo re-calibrated after change? I don't want to go to a dealership!!

Have you checked against your phone GPS to see how far off it is?

I've never seen the readings to be more than 3-5 different. Even new vehicles with standard wheels/tires will be erroneous.

With that said all vehicles will read have different degrees of accuracy at different speeds. For example, you might be spot on at 55 mph, but off 5 mph when doing 25.

If its only 5 mph off,it just seems like a waste of money.

What about the odo? Wouldn’t even a small mph difference over time yield a very wrong odo?

So in 200,000 miles you would show around 1000-10,000 miles less on the odometer? To me that doesn't seem like something that will cost or make me money when I go to sell. I still think you are spending money to fix something that really isn't broken.

I just re read your opening post, I apologize for steering the thread in a different question than you asked, my mind wanders.

    Carry on.

yeah but it's minimal with the 32s or 33s which is probably the most common size upgrades we see on here. But that is a fair point, the odometer will be effected. Given how serious odometer fraud is in the eyes of the government, it's kind of funny that the issue of mileage being inaccurate with tire size upgrades isn't really ever addressed. But really it is pretty minimal so that's probably why.

Please tell me how to correct that durn 1991 thing!!! When I signed on here, a few yrs. back, I had a 1998 Taco reg. cab 2.4, 4 cyl, 5 spd, 4X4, I hit the wrong button and didn't know it till it was too late, that's where the 1991 came from. I've punched every button on this durn computer, but I've yet to find anything to correct the mistake. I now have a 2013 reg. cab 2.7, 4 cyl, auto, 4X4, it shows it up at the top, but I can't get it to change in that little blue space in my sig. From the "actual speed change chart for ring gear & pinion change" I found going from the oem. 4.11 to a 4.88, when the speedo shows 60 mph. the actual speed will be 50.53 mph. If it were 2 or 3, mph. off OK, but 10 mph. off is a little more than I would prefer. Thanks for the links, I'll see what I can figure out.

At the top right of the page there's a few buttons/links labeled 'You' 'Inbox' 'Alerts', etc. ...click on the "You" one and then the "Personal Details" link, should be able to edit it there

Thanks eon, but when I did that is when it started showing the "2013 reg cab 4x4" under all my posts, but the 1991 never changes. I'm not much on computers, surely I'm just not doing something right. This speedo calibrating thing is way more complicated than I had expected. Those hypertech things have got to be mounted to & wired to the truck permanently, I thought you would just get the computer on the truck re-programmed for the new gear & tire size, & all would be good. Never thought about having to buy a new electronic part & mounting it to the truck, be left on there forever. This is way over my head. Does anyone remember when you just took a set screw, or lock nut, out of the side of the transmission, slid the orig. speedo gear out & slid the new correct speedo gear in, replaced the set screw or lock nut & you were done. This seems to be way more complicated than it needs to be. Thanks for yall's help, but this ain't good.

That's your signature, the one that says 2013 Red Cab...you want to go to Personal Details and the the One Line Vehicle Description to change the 1991 Tacoma part

Because you're an automatic transmission, your speed is read from the ABS sensors so a gear change will have no effect on your speedometer. Only changing the tire size will affect it. Even with a tire size difference it'll be off only a 4-5 mph at highway speeds depending on tire size.

That said, here is a way to calibrate it. You have to permanently install a module on these trucks to correct it, whether it's a dakota or a hypertech.

Thanks Randy, I just got thru reading that in another thread. That will be great, hard to believe, but in today's world it shouldn't be surprising. And thank you Ryan, that stupid "1991 Taco" thing has been embarrassing me for yrs. Ya'll keep the good stuff coming.
