what lug nuts?

soo kinda dumb question.. maybe not....

I have a set of method mr305 NV that have the tapered 60degree lug bore, stock lugs will not work as the bore diameter is too small, and stock uses a shank style lug nut w/ flat washer..

Known issues.. TACOMAS have SHORT lug studs, literally with a standard tapered lug nut you will only grab 3-4 threads this is not what i would consider safe by any means 8-10 I am more comfortable with...

solution: Extended thread lug nuts, swap out studs to longer studs

Now I have Extended thread lug nuts from my 1.25" Spacers (that I no longer use with the new rims), these are currently holding the new rims/tires on.. even with these that is approximately a 2-3mm gap behind the rim of just stud, which I can call acceptable. but not ideal..


so main question... should I change the studs out for longer ones, or is there a longer ET lug nut out there? or should I just torque to spec (83-85ftlb), and check every month or so and not be a worrier...

looking to replace the ugly ass nuts from my spacers as theyre a coated steel, and my rims are bronze/black. looking for black ones..

I have the black spline drive on my Fuel wheels and love the look and the fact that even if someone has the key to remove them they most likely won’t take the time to remove all 24 of them.

 

not so much worried about the splint drive locking feature as much as I like how narrow the fit into the wheels. and will prevent scratches on my purdy new rims..

 

most spline drives are removeable with the proper sized 6pt socket anyways, we lost the lug key for a buddies silverado 2500HD, and used a socket beat onto teh splined lugs.. worked great...

 

I just swapped out the studs. 1-2 hours with basic hand tools and a floor jack and stands. Add an impact gun and air hammer = ~1 hour job.
ET lugs weren't even a possibility with Venomrex wheels as the stud holes aren't large enough in diameter to except the ET portion of the nut.

 

happen to know what the stock length studs are? so i can order ones that are at least 0.25"- 0.5' longer?

 

Overall length of the OEM stud is 1.779"
It gets confusing however, as some manufactures measure the overall length, others just the thread, and others still, the thread + hip length.
And, of course, you'll find both metric and imperial measurements depending on the country of manufacture.

yup, juat looked it up 42.5mm, or 1.67" is stock length, but I believe that to be an under head measurement. looking up an M12 x 1.5 wheel stud gives a LOT of options, most similar to stock, or a 2 inch stud. thinking this would be slightly too long for a capped lug nut... and I would hate to have to cut down a wheel stud and lose its strength..

 

I cut slowly and the studs didn't even become too hot to handle. Zero chance of a loss in strength/ integrity if you're careful and patient with the cut.
