Sorry, I thought you had zero protection in your truck. I was comparing the OEM OR/Pro composite skid to aftermarket metal.

I came pretty close in my F150 to puncturing a hole in the tank and the high center really worked the tank over. No hole, but i'm sure if I was a little further away from home there would have been one because Murphy's Law.

If you've seen a kiddie pool you know what kind of plastic the stock skid is made of.

I have a Trail Toys UMHW Skid from @SMKYTXN adds the protection anyone needs without all the weight.

I had a Pelfrey steel skid for several years and despite some hard wheeling never even scratched the paint on it.

Most gas tank skids are mounted directly to the plastic gas tank via the straps, any impact that steel or aluminum would provide greater protection than the stock plastic is going to crush the gas tank. I switched because the Trail Toys version has a smooth bottom that things will slide off, the OR skid has holes that might catch a branch.

Gas tank skid isn't going to prevent a floppy drive shaft from destroying everything in it's vicinity.

His post is confusing — he has a 4x4 TRD that didn’t have a skid somehow, I guess (?), and the Member mentioned on the first page suffered a sheared axle or something like that on a notably gnarly trail in Moab, right, and wrecked his tank at that point? I don’t mean to derail the thread, OP, I just question people’s gut feeling versus actual experiences of failure with the OR/Pro skid.

Could it be the TRD Sport model doesn't have the skid?

The BAMF skid OP ordered is the same design I had from Pelfrey, very good design, bolts are well protected but way too heavy on a truck that already has issues from to much weight on the driver's side.

Likely, only the OR and Pro have the OEM skid

Below is what my skids looked like and the current skids I'm running. Steel gas tank skid is an overkill for almost every person on this site.

You under estimate the getting even part of a jaded Rachel. The soft under belly needs to be protected

Then none of the skids currently on the market will help, none offer side protection, so the normally nice woman that you drove to madness with your frat boy antics will not have to work to hard to drill a hole in the side.

Weights not an issue for my needs. I agree with you too. My trips are one or two days max and I’m not concerned about my gas mileage. Getting home and not getting stranded is my goal.

Replacing that thin-walled rear driveshaft with a thicker custom unit might do more to keep you from getting stranded.

50 lb battery, 200 lb driver, 120 lbs of gas. Do you really need to add another 30 lbs to those overworked springs?
