Local Toyota dealer quote. 2006 Tacoma 4.0. Is that in the ballpark for your dealer?

I think you can take this on yourself. Not many tools needed. Not a hard job, just take it slow. Recommend a telescopic magnetic tool to help make it easier. My dealer quoted about the same as well.

damn that's nuts. I haven't had a dealer do it in a few years but last time they charged me $125 in labor for my 3.4l v6, and that's with the supercharger sort of 'in the way'. I provided the spark plugs, but those are like 30 bucks.

I have no plans on doing it myself. I was just curious of this dealer quote was in line with other dealers. I just checked with another local dealer and was quoted $240.00. Going there now. Thanks.

The dealer wanted like $15/each for the plugs last time I asked about them; same thing on Amazon is like $4. Number six is a PITA but the rest aren't terrible. The magnetic pickup tool is definitely handy as is a wobble head socket but a regular spark plug socket will work. Don't over-tighten them.

I think it's high but I haven't checked in a few years, might be more in line with today's prices now. As most of us know, dealerships usually price gouge customers on repair work. If you don't plan on doing it yourself then I would at least maybe get a quote from an independent mechanic shop. They don't have to specialize in Toyotas even, since spark plugs are a pretty universally basic job. It will be a lot cheaper I bet

If I were closer I'd come by and change them for you for $300, saving you $50. :anonymous:

OK, So call your local Dealer service department Ask what is your effective labor rate. I will be $130.00 per Hr. or more, or is there a menu price to change the spark plugs? you will be shocked

Gotta learn to change spark plugs or start driving Prius Trail Boss.

$300 to change six plugs? Outrageous. Unless it's one of those Corvettes where you have to undo the motor mount and jack up the engine. Or a 95 4Runner 4.0L.

Ok, original dealer must have mistook my Tacoma for a Tundra. The dealer charges for Tacoma spark plug replacement should be $209. Tundra is $350-390, much more labor and double plugs.

Well, I just had the dealer change mine (4.0 l)... $170 CDN...So I would think the OP's quote is a bit stiff.

Not trying to press an issue, just consider this, it’s an easy job, even for a novice, and there are step by step instructional clips on YouTube as well as on this forum.
No reason to pay your hard earned money on this type of maintenance.

this. It literally takes about 45 minutes and spark plugs can be had for $3/piece.

It took me a several hours to do it because:
    A) I combined it with cleaning the throttle body
    B) I Replaced the PCV valve
    C) Completely removed the big rubber intake hose which required me to unbolt the air pump thing and air filter box (not in the tutorial)
    D) Tried to clean surfaces a bit
    E) I'm slow
    F) I dropped stuff down into the engine bay
    G) Spark plug socket got stuck on the spark plug in hole (tape the socket to the extension!)
    H) Messing around with different length extensions and wrenches
    I) It was hot
    J) Lunch
    K) staring at the engine bay and planning catch can install

But really, it is very simple and now that I have the experience, I could probably do it in an hour.
