I keep all of my aux lights covered. But I was wondering about after-market fog lights. They are not going to be routinely covered.

I read the statute a few times and it seems they are okay. I'm not sure about the turning off when the high beams are on. Why can't laws be written in normal speech?

I had moisture in one of my ditch lights, and after being covered for a couple of months, it was gone. So now I just leave 'em covered. They are pleather and zip on and off. I sort of like that I'm not tempted to use them when I shouldn't.

You're probably fine. My Baja's aren't legal and they don't say anything. They typically just care that they go off when high beams are on.

I emailed them just because I don't trust everything I see online. Here is their response.

"Thank you for contacting the Virginia State Police - Safety Division.

Section 46.2-1020 of the Code of Virginia allows an L.E.D. light bar to be installed on your truck; however, it must be unlit when traveling on any highway within the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Highway is defined as the entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place open to the use of the public for purposes of vehicular travel in the Commonwealth, including the streets and alleys, and, for law-enforcement purposes, (i) the entire width between the boundary lines of all private roads or private streets that have been specifically designated "highways" by an ordinance adopted by the governing body of the county, city, or town in which such private roads or streets are located and (ii) the entire width between the boundary lines of every way or place used for purposes of vehicular travel on any property owned, leased, or controlled by the United States government and located in the Commonwealth.

In reference to the inspection requirements, Section 19VAC30-70-160 of the Administrative Code requires inspectors to inspect for and reject if it meets the criteria outlined below.

    1. The auxiliary lamp is being used for a purpose other than for which it is manufactured or previously approved by the superintendent.

    2. The auxiliary lamp does not have a clear lens.

    3. Any reflector in such auxiliary lamp device is not clear.

EXCEPTIONS: An auxiliary lighting device that is both covered and unlit shall not be considered for inspection. An auxiliary lighting device that has a clear lens has clear reflectors, and is unlit shall not be considered for inspection. Fog and driving lamps mounted below the level of the regular headlamps must be checked for aim as outlined in subdivisions I 12 h and 13 f of this section if not covered.

NOTE: The covers shall be a type that would be installed as original equipment and not tape, paper bags, aluminum foil, or similar materials.

I have provided a link below to Section 46.2-1020 of the Code of Virginia and Section 19VAC30-70-160 of the Administrative Code for you to review.

So now my amber lense covers which have been good are no longer allowed and it should be left clear and off? Who uses amber emergency lights? I thought Emergency is red and blue and amber is for marking and for big trucks to show width and certain points on the vehicle.

The way I read it is "Non-SAE" Amber=Illegal (only for inspections).

The attempt to decipher the code regarding lights and inspections is an exercise in futility. It's crazy to think you're going to achieve some type of clarity or understanding, especially when it's application is so wildly inconsistent.

We're not looking for clarity or understanding. We prefer obfuscation and confusion.

    And we found it!
