TRD Sport or Off Road?

i cant decide if i want the TRD sport or TRD off road package for a 2005 tacoma im thinking about getting. i want either black or white and i really like the color matched grill, door handles, sport rims etc. However i like the locker that comes with the off road package. Im going 4x4 either way so what would be better for off roading?

 

The TRD Offroad would be better for offroading.

OR

Get the Sport because you like the looks and add an ARB rear locker to it and have the best of both worlds.

I would go off road cause a arb locker is alot of money and you really do need a locker to truelly off road. But if your more off a mild off roader the sport will do. I've wished i had the locker on some pretty sketch places.

Sport

 

The TRD Off-Road (09+) also has Downhill Assist Control, a larger brake booster and A-TRAC. Those are thigns you can not (well not easily anyway) add to a sport. You can color match stuff easy though. The sport hood (fake stupid hood scoop) is the hardest thing to get second hand... but possible. If you really want to wheel, I'd get the off-road then work on color matching stuff. Plus if you decide to Satoshi or something else... it's not that hard to paint the grill while you're at it. You can get color matched paint pretty cheap that will get the job done (maybe not factory, but not bad at least). If you're really going to wheel, it'll get scratched the hell up anyway.

Edit my bad: didn't see 2005. Keep in mind 2005 had the motor mount issues... it's something that if it was never fixed you'll have to do on your own. It requires welding new gussets, so that may cost you a bit of extra coin.

 

get a silver sport and ill swap hoods with ya!

 

It would probably be cheaper to get the Off Road package and swap out the color matched pieces later. Less $$$ than getting a locker.

I had an '05 before the '10... I had a 4WD OFF ROAD Double Cab, automatic. I did test drive a Sport first, and that fake hood scoop (and no locking differential) killed that idea! For serious off roading, when climbing and descending grades, you need over-the-hood visiblity to see where you are going to place your truck. The scoop blocks the vision needed. More important was having a 100% rear lock ability for traction issues. Why pay thousands for aftermarket systems when Toyota offers it standard (on the Off Road)?

Also one thing to keep in mind. If you go Black Sand Pearl.... you don't really need to color match everything. Just the grill and rear bumper. I got my rear bumper for $300 from Cliff, and the grill at the dealer for about 260 (was lazy). Also did BHLM... and it looked great imo. This is my previous truck of course...

TRD Off Road or TRD Sport

I don't want to sound like a jerk but doesn't the name of the different models answer you question?

 

If you're going with a 5 foot bed on a DC no matter whether it's a sport or an off-road, then go with the off-road. If a larger bed is a must then your only option is a sport.

 

Kyouto42 - you mentioned motor mount issues on the '05. Is this something specific to the '05 year or did it continue beyond? I'm buying a Tacoma later this week and was not aware of this issue.

Is there a thread that discusses this any further? I don't plan on doing much (if any) off-roading - any possibility that this issue needs correcting for off-roading purposes?

I believe a few 2006's also had the issue but was very limited to early ones. I might be wrong on that one.

My dad's 05 never had the fix I don't believe, but he doesn't use it very hard, nor off-road. Still, I'd get it fixed simply for peace of mind myself (though I actually abuse the hell out of my stuff lol).

Agreed!!! Why the heck doesn't Toyota offer the OR in a LB...

 

The reason is, it doesn't make a lot of sense for an off-road rig to have a longer wheel base.
