Walked the walk by being the exact type of person who gets trails closed?
Walked the walk by doing something stupid?

I totally see where you are coming from, and you make some good and valid points. Nothing wrong with using your overland rig offroad, but you also need to be prepared to handle the conditions and not get in over your head. I'm sure he learned a valuable lesson, but one can wheel and not be a poser, without overdoing, as in this case. The best piece of offroad gear we have is in between our ears, AKA our brains, and he could've realized it wasn't the best idea to continue on that rain drenched playa solo.

Must say I've learned alot about recovery procedures in these conditions, though. Happy new year all!

Thank you for the kinds words! .. i appreciate that.

i mostly use my tacoma for towing our rv trailer and do some fire roads.
that's why i keep it bone stock. this road was supposed to be a fire road, it was all dry and wide the whole way. this section though, took me by surprise and as soon as i found out that i "fckd up" hehe. i turned around.

once my tires are worn out, they will wear out quick since i tow a lot, i will invest in better tires.
and yes my taco is not a garage princess hehe. iv put this truck into some good challenges so far. this last trip, we towed 4500lbs with it for 1000 miles roundtrip and it's been doing great at 13mpg!

Just about everything that can be said, already has... but I dont think you understand Crawl Control vs MTS yet... (they are 2 different things )

Might want to start at the traction control sticky first OP.

I think the OP is a good sport and willing to learn . A lot of people start threads and can't take the replies and either flee or get hateful . I did a lot of things in my life wouldn't try again -- be careful and GL .

All i see is a good time between you guys honestly ... I was smiling by the end of it.

Re; Your post complaint: Live and learn ... crawl control isn't for hills like that , it wont overcome gravity like that.

A long muddy steep hill is always a 4lo , locker on and higher throttle situation , always.

But what is see is someone new to 4x4ing getting out and learning and having fun , keep doing it.

I have years and years of 4x4ing experience , have had full blown tube chassis rock crawlers , older Toyota's with dual cases and 40's ect ... these Newer Tacoma GET it when you learn how to use them.

I agree, it aint no gimmick, but it aint gonna pull you out of mud that even a front locker couldn't. CC is best for sand and IME climbing some trickier hills.

He is a newbie and was ignorant. We have all been there. There are members of the offroading community who maliciously do stupid shit to damage trails and fuck shit up for the rest of us but something tells me the OP didn't do it on purpose

Well, don't give up on CC just yet. Im sure you'll find it useful if you plan on doing more trails. I see a lift and different tires in your future lol.

Another lesson i can't help but bring up, don't let your kids fart around behind your truck on a hill like that.

I have seen FAR too many run a ways due to inexperience before ... they were right in the line of fire.

I'm more impressed at how cool the kids were. No tantrums, no meltdowns.
Oh daddy want to go trucking? That's cool. We're fine by this Big rock alone having fun all by ourselves . Great kids.
OP, just as you would with any tool, practice makes you learn to use it better and you also need better tires like others suggested.
Look for your local off-roading crew and spend some weekends putting the truck through the dirt.
The Big Bear trip with the TW gang taught me a thing or two, (mostly to bring warm clothes o_O).

I’m guessing the OP struggles while driving on dry roads under optimal conditions...just a hunch.

No problem with him being a newbie or ignorant. The problem is he's blaming the truck, and not himself.

That was truly painful to watch. Calling crawl control a failure and posting a vid saying such when the failure was on the driver is insulting. Sorry OP, but your post and video demonstrate your lack of knowledge about driving and your truck’s features. At least your wife had better sense.

Did you make the kids walk up the hill to the truck or did you go back down and pick them up?
