CB Radio installs on 2nd Gen Tacomas?

Where & how did you install your CB Radios on your late model(2009-2011) Tacomas? Thanks.

 

<- in my 2006. And I mounted mine in the center console under the lid . Mounted perfect and is out of sight. Ran my cable from the bed under the cab, through a drail grommet, under carpet and right up into the center console. Ill take pictures when I get home

I have a Cobra 75wx st mounted on my center console with an external speaker. Having it mounted this way allows me to unplug it when not in use and hide it so there is nothing to entice ppl to steal it.

What up...just saw your thread...

Hard mounted on the passenger side of the center console, went through the firewall, using a straightened clothes hangar, to the battery for power and for the PA speaker, ran the coax behind the dash down the driver's side (popped out the plastic covers on the floor on the side) then through the grommet through to the bed and mounted the antenna on the rail on the driver's side (unscrewed and popped out the plastic panel behind the back seat as well). You can see in the second pic where the coax is going through the cab. I used an 18ft coax for mine, other ppl do it with a 6 footer as well. Pretty sure Socal16 has his that way. The grommet was re-sealed with some silicon. The antenna mount is grounded straight to the bedrail.

I see others have their CBs hidden but I like how I can reach all the knobs and it doesn't get in the way having someone riding shotgun either. Thanks again to RecklessTaco for a ton of help with the install, his is the same way. Hope this helps!!

 

I installed the Cobra 75WXST radio as well. I like how the entire radio is basically in the handset. I installed it in the arm rest compartment and have the coax running underneath the console to a grommet through the floor and to the bed with a Firestik No Ground Plane antenna. The no ground plane antennas work well for us with the composite beds as there is not metal bed to act as a ground plane.

The arm rest has a great area behind it where the radio unit can be mounted. Then I drilled a hole to the console area. This is where you screw the microphone in. This allows the entire CB to be hidden when not in use. When it is in use, you can pull out the MIC and the arm rest still closes without crimping the cable.

 

I need to mount a CB in my new truck. not sure if I should get something like a Cobra 19 DX IV Compact or just get a Cobra 25 LTD Classic CB Radio.
Mounting option since I have a camper shell going on and hate to drill into the body of the truck any other good mounting spots using existing body mount/screw holes? I have seen the Firestix antenna not sure how good they are or is there one better to buy?

Can somebody help me out.

For those of you that had single din radios installed, what is the total depth of the cubby hole under the stereo? Most single din stereos are about 6" or so deep. I'm trying to find out how far the cubby hole goes back if one were to remove the backside of the cubby hole.

Or if somebody could just measure the depth of the cubby hole would be helpfull.

I'm trying to figure out how much a 9" deep full sized CB would stick out past the stereo once installed.

Also what is the height of the cubby hole? Looks like 2" from pics?

Well I ended up pulling out the factory stereo to see what was up. I could fit a full size old school radio in there but would require too much hacking and ghetto mounting to do it and the radio would still stick out about 1-2" beyond the stereo face, plus the knobs. Sticking out wouldn't bother me too bad but it just looks like too much of a project. I'm still considering this as it's the only feasable route but not holding my breath.

Looked more closely at the small cubby hole in front of my manual shifter. No way in hell. CB would stick out so far it would easily hit the shifter. Plus my gauges are there and they work well there.

Thought about velcro'ing the crap out of it to the top of the dash. Sort of an easy reach but looks like shit.

So for now it's wedged between the passenger side of the bench seat and the trans hump. Now I need a chiropractor.

Pisses me off that in this day and age that in order to get a NICE 40 channel SSB radio with bells and whistles, they still insist on making them the size of refridgerators, plus all the gay chrome knobs.

 

I just went thru that same exercise, looking for a place to mount my new 2m rig in my reg cab.

As soon as I pulled the center console, it became clear that where I wanted to put it - it wasn't going to fit. I kept arguing with reality for half an hour, but reality didn't budge.

I conclude the best spot is on the cab wall behind the seat, with remote operation up in front. For CB, this would be that Cobra 75 model, that has all the controls and display on the mike.

I wanted to do the remote speaker the way Barlowrs has his, but the reg cab console isn't quite as tall, and won't fit that HRO remote speaker where he's got it.

 

I think what I'm going to do (until I change my mind again) is keep my Cobra 148 under the passenger side of the seat loose (stored and hooked up) and just use it for the times I go to a mountain top to shoot skip or play with people on echo.

Also get a Cobra 75 mounted up all stealth like and just use the 75 for normal driving use. Then pick up a a coax splitter/switch box for the 148.

Either that or use my 148 as a base and get a Galaxy 979 with RF Limited Extreme mic (same as my 148) and install the 979 on top of my dash, instead of having two radios. For a 40 channel SSB radio the 979 has a shit load of standard features. No RB or freq counter but most (I think all 11 meter) of Galaxy's built in freq counters are only 5 digit anyway, which to me is pointless. They should be 6 digit or don't bother. I could always get one of the Galaxy remote blue LED 6 dig freq counters and put that wherever, since the 979 has the plug for it on the back.

Having the thing stuffed between the seat and trans hump does have a nice advantage of putting it under the seat in 3 seconds to hide it. One nice feature I like about the 75 is the 40 channel scan feature. saves wear and tear on my 148 knob.

Most likley I will never make up my mind what to do.
