What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Agreed. I drive like an asshole and i hit the sticks at least once a month. My lowers squeak like whores bed. Especially after water crossings or rain. A little wd40 shuts her up for a bit. I need to have them rebuilt, or better yet, teach myself and save some $$$

 

CO are super easy to rebuild. The thing that makes it difficult is getting the coil off lol. A good coil compressor is worth it. 5 of us in SD threw in $100 and got one. Replacing the bearings though you just need a pick to get the snap rings out, then press it out with a c clamp or vice and a couple sockets. I was surprised how easy it is to do.I also Have been beating my rig up so my intervals seem sooner than most. A new rebuild makes the truck feel awesome!

how hard is the bulbs to get to? also is there one for the gear selector my son is having a hard time finding drive in the dark lol

Not bad. You remove the plastic trim piece below the stereo (two clips), then remove the A/C control plate (just pop it out with a pry tool). Then the black stereo bezel is held down by 3 or 4 philips screws and a couple plastic clips, just pull it towards you. Then there are a couple more phillips screws holding down the A/C control unit, once you have it free there is a wire connector on the back to unplug and then a few more screws to remove on the back of the A/C control unit. Then you can swap out the bulbs.

Plug the connector back in and test before you put everything back together. If you're using LED bulbs and then don't work the first time you probably need to flip them around.

I have an M/T so I don't know about the gear selector bulb, but the one thread I found said the Toyota P/N is 90981-11018.

 

Tossin it out here... Anyone know of a set of used aftermarket 1st Gen UCAs? Preferably SPC but not gonna be picky.

For my kid's 3rdGen 4runner, he's on a budget, lol.

Yep, plug n' play.
I have LEDs in the instrument cluster, overhead map lights and interior light. They dim with the door. I have never had to solder any resistors. I don't know why or what to tell you but perhaps it's just an 02 thing. I've posted links to the bulbs I've used and one reported they didn't work for him.

 

i talked to a long-time Toyota master mechanic yesterday about this clutch thing and regarding what I read about it not returning to proper position on the stock spring.

he told me something about a hydraulic issue (not necessarily the coil spring)

 

how in the heck does a left inner tie rod go bad at 114k

 

it would be cool if the gear stick did light up!

 

just buy the previous model of SPC that are on Rock Auto.

I’ve been running these for 2 years now, no problems

 

All I know is I tried all kinds of things. New master and slave cylinder, bleeding and flushing. Even a new clutch. Didn't replace the clutch because of this, it just happened to wear out at the same time I was struggling with this issue. None of that worked. It got so bad that every time I pushed the clutch down it stayed there. Had to reach down and pull it up with my hand because it was all the way on the floor, couldn't get my toe under it. Made it challenging to drive to say the least. I popped out the coil spring and bam it was fixed, instantly. Lots of other people have similar stories.

 

how on earth do you pull that up by hand?
do you stop the truck and get out?
if i drop a coin for the toll road, or something like that, on the floor i have to pull over and get out to pick it up most of the time

 

I'm thin and fairly flexible. Plus I only had to do it to get moving from a stop, so going real slow still. After I got going I just shifted without the clutch. Needless to say I didn't put up with this very long. Once it got that bad I started really scouring the internet for any clue. That's when I found TacomaWorld, and the solution.
