2005 5 spd R155 hard to get in gear

I know this topic has been discussed but I was hoping someone could give me some info about lock ball pins on the R155 trans:

Has anybody replaced them to fix the "hard to get into gear problems"?

Where are they located? I saw that another member replaced his on a 6 spd and it solved his problems...

I am new and I am putting in a new clutch, clutch plate, throw bearing, pilot bearing, clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, and fork.

I am throwing money at this and I am afraid it is just a lock ball pin? Has anybody had problems getting their R155 in gear? (all the gears when cold and warmed up).
When the truck isn't running I can go thru all the gears fine without the clutch..

I have changed the transmission fluid with Redline MT 90, and have changed the grommets on the bottom of the shifter stick.

The truck has 168,000 miles and I bought it used so I do not have any work history. That being said the Dot 3 fluid in the clutch master cylinder is a dark color indicating contamination.
I am hoping I am not missing something..... which wouldn't surprise me

If its hard to go in all gears , my first guess would be your clutch . For some reason , when you push your clutch pedal down to the floor , the power from your engine is not being removed causing your transmission synchronizers to work overtime .
Another symptom of hard shifting is very very low on fluid .

Detents pins inside the transmission only hold the transmission in the gear you select .
Interlock pins prevent two gears at the same time .
These pins wont make your transmission hard to shift .

As long as you can guarantee your fluid was topped up , I would proceed with the clutch job as you have planned

I just put in Redline MT in my MT about 3 weeks ago and it is full.

I will let you know if the clutch takes care of the hard shifting problems.

Some people swear by Redline, and others absolutely hate it. Depends on your climate, but atleast in the Euro world people have expressed displeasure with the MT90 in the cold (hard shifts, grinding, etc). Ravenol MTF is popular for those type of cars. IMO that would be overkill for a Tacoma, or not, it's your money. I believe fluid choice might be a factor here, even if it was doing it before the change.

I have heard the same, it was shifting poorly before I added the MT 90 and it got a little better. I live in Phx Arizona so it doesnt get that cold.

MT 90 is a synthetic. Amsoil is a synthetic too? What would you recommend?

 

Amsoil is decent and would be a safe bet. Not sure if your trans takes GL4 or GL5, owners manual would tell you. Amsoil's site is showing both. If you can use GL5 75W90, plain old Mobil 1 is my go to for trucks.

 

On the advice of @gearcruncher I went with motorcraft

$34 xtm5qs ford genuine ford fluid XT-M5-QS full synthetic manual transmission fluid - 1 quart , black

xtm5qs a couple years ago. Noticed an improvement over the redline mt90. Change it every 30k and used redline about six times, almost time to change the motorcraft out for time #3. I'll use it again. Works way better in the cold and seems all around smoother.
