I found this post via a search and it helped tremendously. My belt also started to squeal during hot/humid days with only 40K on the clock. Per the dealer, the belt should last at least 60K, but the squealing was enough of a nuisance to change it. I picked up the Gatorback belt from Autozone which is a bit pricery ($30) compared to the dealer belt ($20). Part# 4070834. However, the Gatorbelt claims to be the "quiet" belt due to the horizontal grooves. ;) In any event, the diagram in this post is accurate and one I obtain from Autozone was wrong even though the # of pulleys (9 total) was correct. For those interested, the socket is actually 14mm and the tensioner pulley is the pulley directly to the right of the crank shaft and has the belt wrapped around both sides of it. I used a 1/2 inch rachet and a small extension to turn it counter clock wise and slip off the belt starting on the upper left hand side pulley. I just did the opposite putting the new one on and finished up with the upper left hand pulley as specified by another poster. It took me about an hour and a few choice words as the space is small to work with. I also drew a picture of the pulleys and the belt set up before removing the existing belt to ensure I put it back together correctly. I also saw on here where another posted suggested cranking the engine a few times and checking the belt before fully turning it over, which was a great idea. :D Hope this helps some else as well?

UPDATE: I just saw on Horsepower TV that a lot of belt squeak can be a result of dirt/grease build up rather than age. I know my OEM belt looked perfectly fine when I took it off, but I still elected to replace it. The recommendation was to clean your existing belt with a mild soap and water mix and hang it up to dry for a few hours before re-installing. This method may help extended your existing belt rather than having to replace it? Good luck either way!

Let me know how that belt works out for you. I had to replace my Toyota belt in less than a year. JUNK!

Will do. I have actually used the Gatorback belt before in a previous vehicle with no issues, but mileage can vary between vehicles.

Eyeball, Spyder. Thanks for the help!

I looked everywhere in town today for a Haynes manual for my 05 Tacoma with 33,000mls, NAPA and Advanced didn't have the book. I'm guessing its not out yet? Anyone know for sure?

Anyway, once I found this thread it took me about 10 min to replace the belt... I did need a second hand though holding the ratchet while I guided the belt on.

    saved about $60!

Diagram Verified, 2006 taco, automatic 4X4, Took off the 4 bolts holding the
skid plate, found tensioner up and to the right of the CS. Taking out the old was easy, in with the new, kinda a challenge, but I did it alone. Cheater for length helps a ton going back on.

General knowlege of this taco, I have the original BFG terrain tires, new after 43K miles, and truck is lifted 2 Inches. This has been the best sand truck I have ever had, ITs a bit small for long camp trips down the beach but very managable. Main reason to change leaf springs was to take all the camp gear and not have the truck squat in the rear. When loaded, rides great compared to my old F250. Here is a youtube vid of some places and this stuff can last 50 miles on a bad day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RTG_qYfQ48&feature=channel_page { stock TRD during this trip } . During a recent trip to matagorda island nearly everyone was getting stuck, this taco managed to get me to my camp site and back without a hitch, keep in mind I did not screw around, like others did only to have to get drug out of the sand. Get momentem, keep front tires straight and get to where you going .. thanks for this howto.. belt is now changed! June 26 2009

I just wanted to say that this image saved me big time yesterday! I like to work on cars but I rarely do without supervision as I tend to get in over my head pretty easily. So I decided to tackle this belt on my own yesterday and thanks to ya'll I was able to pull it off! And in 45 minutes none the less! :D:eek::D

:threadjacked:I saw a special once on steroids and this guy was part of the topic. He litterally injected into his biceps on a routine basis and of course was a dealer too. The video tape of his act was gruesome to say the least and of course he lost everything due to being dealer. There's video tape on YouTube of it if anyone cares? :D

Excellent thread. Just replaced my noisy Toyota serp belt at 95k miles with a Gatorback. Did it all from the top of the engine. Took me about 25 minutes start to finish. Thank you TW!

You referenced an old thread instead of starting a new one? Dude, you're my favorite new member! ;)

I scraped up my hands pretty good doing this in the dark one night but it was well worth it. Congrats on doing the job yourself. :)

Make a drawing of the Serpentine Belt location...Locate the tension pully. It is a small pully at position 2 oclock from the CS (crankshaft pully). Use a 3/8 Drive racket with a 3" extension and a 14mm socket on this pully and turn the nut counterclockwise to release the tension. Remove the belt. To re install a new belt, feed the belt around the fan and start at the bottom and feed the belt around the crank pully and all the pullies and idlers on the right side of the engine. Then feed the belt onto the left side pullies and leave the belt off that idler for now. Put the racket on the tension pully and turn it clockwise to release the tension and at the same time put the belt over the last idler......Now make sure the belt is into the grooves in all the pullies or you will tear the belt off....this cannot be stressed enough....when you are happy that belt in on all the pullies, start the engine and that's it..........

Im back.. its time to change the belt again and found my own post.
Truck has 80K now, and I would rather change the belt than have it snap
while on the road this summer.
