5100s with 888 coils. Unfortunately when going this route, the 888 coils, rated at 590 spring rate cannot handle the weight of our truck so they started to sag and I now have small spacers to regain the lift height. I didn't want to preload because I like how soft the ride is now.

I agree with your first statement, however, if using a softer spring I think you will definitely be able to preload the 5100s. For instance if you used 885s and preloaded them to the 4th notch I think it would ride great and give you roughly 3" of lift up front. Primarily due to the lesser print rate than factory.

It's not so much that they are bad, rather they just can't handle the weight and a lot of stores that sell them are either uneducated on stock spring rates for the 2016+ Tacoma or are horrible and choose not to relay the information to paying customers. It's unfortunate.

on the bright side the JBA's were the right choice and will fix your problems for good.

if anyone reading this thread or lurking it sees this, and you have lifted your truck, and even those that have NOT lifted it, I would remember this here :
    https://www.desertrat.com/i-23336167-spc-alignment-cams-front-lower-toyota-tacoma-2005-2017.html#!year=2017
(you need one full set per side)(each side of the truck uses 2 cams 1top/1bottom)
    and then read this:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/cam-bolt-question-now-with-answers-and-writeup.502084/

consider doing this or at least check yours at some point. If you decide to change them out, use a paint pen to mark your cam-settings, so you can keep your truck aligned during/after the swap.

Here's what's confusing me. Right now I've got an additional lift of just about 3.25 inches. With 5100s set at 0 I'm supposed to get 2 inches. Does it make sense that setting 5100s at top notch only yields 1+ of additional lift???

Yikes...that's going to be fun soon. Those CV ribs are touching so much it's only a matter of months before they wear through

I didn’t mean to make it personal, plenty of people use 5100’s that way without any issues. Headstrong Offroad and many others back them up so I’m not making anything up. Personal experience is much more reliable than opinion as well.

Just from the angle of those UCAs I can tell it's not good. What leaf pack are you running considering the fact you have some tires in the bed?

I lost about 3/8” on my eibach after a month. I threw in a couple 1/4 spacers and everything is good.

personal experience is indistinguishable from opinion in cases like this. The truck is governed by non-negotioable physics and reality. The parts literally can only adjust so much, or articulate so much, even less so when a wacky configuration is wanted by the customer because they saw it online. Its only the perception its "fine" but rest assured the wear and tear is happening whether you want to believe it or not.

and those people are in the profit business. If they actually CARED like a good brother, they wouldnt even be selling this shit in the first place. Imagine head-strong or whoever sells this stuff putting up a blocker at "check-out now" if customer had "bilstein 5100 on the 4thclip and block spacers" or whatever other kit in their cart. They would probably do 80% less business at that point. Its just the reality of the business. Complete snake-oil sold to under-educated customers.

ALL suspension upgrades necessitate alignment. You cant hand-wave this away. Also, a tech handing you a "its good!" sheet from his align-o-matic 3000™ computer does NOT MEAN it was a "good" alignment that is not blowing your CV's, ball-joints and drive-line to pieces. It would sure suck to get "30,000 miles just fine" of driving subtracted off the life of the truck because you skipped the upper-control arms during a a lift. Thats how big of an impact UCA's make for a lift 2"+.
