Greetings everyone. I have a couple of questions in regards to vehicle mods in WA state. I currently live in Utah and the wife and I might consider moving to the Evergreen state in a couple of years. Does Wa have any strict vehicle mod laws? I currently have a 2011 long travel taco. It has fiberglass fenders front and rear, but they cover the tires. Years ago, I heard that Wa, doesn't allow fiberglass fenders? Is there any truth to this?

Fake news. I see glass fenders on vehicles all the time. As a matter of fact, the front fenders on our dump trucks at work are fiberglass. Helps with the weight when you have to open the hood and check the fluids before firing it up for the day.

Good to know! I wasn't sure how many long travel trucks there are up in that state as well. I am originally from SoCal. Having a long travel truck is pretty standard. I am slowly corrupting the taco owners in Utah.

For the most part unless you have the worst luck in the world, if you don't act a fool and draw attention to yourself, you probably won't be given a second thought. But of course that would be if there was a glass fender law. It's either glass fenders or 8" wide bushwhackers on full sizes. A bit of everything up here.

Good to know. I haven't had issues in Utah. My long travel truck is pretty sleeper looking. Tires are covered, and I do have front mud flaps. PANO_20190628_143054.jpg

That pic looks like a trail from around these parts. One corner in particular on the Lester to green water forest service road.

I took that last summer in July. It is up in our local Uinta Mtns. We had a lot of snow pack. This area offers many trails for 4x4's and sxs. You basically can pick a trail and end up somewhere.

Those rules seem pretty lax compared to other states. My truck meets all of those except the front bumper is a hybrid and is not fully 4.5". Utah has a similar law, but I haven't been bothered by it.

Also, the front track width is right at 84" outside to outside of the front tires. The code states the vehicle would need side marker lights.. I doubt I will be troubled for this.

As long as you have a front plate rear license plate light and mud flaps your probably fine. Without those three it’s just a matter of time before you get pulled over.

Wait a 470 has a 8” rear. They have a tendency to fail, that’s why the FJ and 460 went to the 8.2” in 2010

For what it’s worth, I run tires that stick out at least an inch from my wheel wells and golly I just keep forgetting that my rear plate is covered by my spare. I don’t think anyone cares. As long as you aren’t driving like a complete asshole and your car doesn’t look like it belongs to a poor person (sadly) you shouldn’t have anything to worry about.

The post 2010 FJ, GX460 and the 5th gen 4runner all have a 8.18" (8.2") ring gear in the rear 3rd. The original FJ, 470 and 4th gen runner all have a 7.87" (8") rear that was prone to failure especially when hopping on slickrock with the center diff locked. The newer 8.2 third is a more or less direct replacement with minor mods and its fairly easy to find a locking one, which wasn't available on the GX or 4runner.

Sorry to be long-winded, I'm hiding in my office during a baby shower
