Raise the rear of your truck and spin the drive shaft my hand. I wonder if if they messed up the pinion preload. Did you get a crush sleeve or solid spacer?

Thanks for the response. I got the solid spacer. What are you suggesting I look for when I raise the rear of the truck? See if the driveshaft actually spins by hand, or how hard it is to turn by hand?

It's tough to tell what the preload is with everything attached. If it is super difficult to spin the drive shaft with truck in Neutral and Ebrake disengaged, then I would consider pulling the diff and having the bearing preloads checked.

You should be able to spin it by hand or put a big screw driver through the ujoint and spin it. Hard to say with everything connected how difficult it should be but I would guess around 20 pounds, you shouldn't have to labor to turn it.

I need to see your truck! I live on Powers and Dublin, I drive from there to Pueblo for my commute. I have been reading this thread. It’s funny how close your gearing matches my speeds with a manual and the 4.30’s. Take care!

You’re right, I overguestimated the trailer weight and thought I underestimated the carrying weight (forgot to include myself and the dogs = 350lbs). Pardon the deep dive.

Including the passengers, I have the Toyota’s weight at 96% now, about 5,400lbs.
That means my GCWR of 11,260 - 5,400 yields a max tow of 5,860lbs.

I previously had my RPOD weight at 4,500lbs + cargo...not sure why. My RPOD-179 manufacturing sticker says the weight is: 3500lbs (add ons I presume) with GVWR 3,785lbs. The sticker says the cargo should never exceed 427lbs, but the GVWR is likely the more important number here. I have it loaded up, so I will go with 3,785 to be safe. It was prolly more.

Either way, w/ 3,785lbs that means I was towing 65% of the max.
That puts the GCWR at 9185lbs or 82% of the 11,260lbs total. Which is a haul.

    Edits; clarification and spelling

yea buddy that’s a lot of weight. I can’t wait to pull the rpod. I know it’s gonna make a huge difference. Will most likely be going on my first long trek this weekend on the new gears pulling a small snowmobile trailer. That will be very interesting as there were some grades I was doing the 3,4,3 dance with the stock gears and tires.

Hi, those of you with nitro gears, what oil are are you running in front and rear diffs?

Regular dinosaur or synthetic? 80-140w in both?

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
Gears have made a huge improvement for me towing my Offroad trailer.
Got to some very steep technical stuff and the low range has significant more pull.
    Very nice indeed.

I drove a 3rd gen that I put 529's in last night. Good power and he said his highway driving has greatly improved.

An update on my install. I complained about binding and friction after installing ecgs pre-assembled third and clamshell. As the gears break in things are getting better. It was cold (for California) when I installed them, the Lucas diff oil that ECGS recommends is super thick, and I think I was just expecting too much out of the gear swap. I also disconnected the battery so my truck is re-learning my driving habits. The truck drives a lot better in regards to being in the correct gear, not jumping around, and holding 6th nicely on the highway. I did some off roading and climbing hills is a lot nicer in 4x4. In general the throttle requires less foot pressure to hold a constant speed. I am lifted 2", have 285s and Vagabond drifter camper. No matter how you slice it, these trucks don't have a lot of torque/power and adding big/heavy tires + a camper shell that kills aerodynamics doesn't help the situation. Are the gears worth it? Yes, because I hated driving my truck after adding the 285s and the shell. Now it's tolerable. These will hold me over for a couple years, but ultimately I will go to a full-size for real power and torque. At work we have a 2.7 ecoboost F150 lifted on 34s. Every time I drive it, that motor puts a smile on my face. I also had a small vibration or buzzing in the steering wheel prior to installing the new clamshell. I think my needle bearing was on it's way out. Now it's super smooth with the solid spacer.

After getting my core exchange refund, the re-gear cost me $2218 in parts/fluid from ECGS.
I spent another $70 on some tools that I needed for the job.
From wheels up to wheels down, the rear took me 7 hours and the front took 8 hours. I needed a friend to help lift the diffs.
I ruined the dust covers on the front hubs when removing them, so it will add a few more dollars to the total when I replace those. Haven't bought them yet.

@schudes i notice that thick Lucas anytime I drive my truck cold. After u posted about drag I was driving around kinda thinking the same thing to an extent and chalked it up to the oil as well. It warms up quickly and I can feel the difference.

I started trying to carefully remove my dust covers and gave up. With my scs wheels they’re visible so I didn’t want to damage them and took a different approach.

For anyone doing it in the future I left the cv connected at the spindle. I was able to remove the lower ball joint mounts, sway bar link and tie rod end. leave the upper ball joint connected and was able to pull the whole spindle with cv shaft out of the way a bit and rest it on one bolt threaded back into the lower ball joint mount on a jack stand. Then pop the cv out of the clam, Bunjee the cv shaft out of the way and drop the front clam. Worked great if you’ve got an extra hand there.

Very true. It’s a local off road shop with a very good reputation so I’m sure they’ll take care of it. Just really frustrating to go this long without any wheeling for break in and now have it out of commission for another weekend.
