    Hello
I recently bought a 5 lug taco and want to do a offroad build.
Has anyone built a 5 lug tacoma and if so what did you use?
I know fox and icon dynamics make stage 1 kits with Coilovers and rear suspension.
My goal is to just get a 3 inch lift with Coilovers and rear suspension. Has anyone ever done it?

5 lug is a whole diff ball game than 6 lug. Best bet for 3 inch in the front it the fabtech spindles/doestch spindles. I will be doing the spindles paired with daystar space on my truck. U will not be able to use coilovers unless u buy long travel for your truck. Out 5 lugs use coil springs and not coilovers or struts

Anything is possible with enough :sawzall: and :welder:

You're just not going to find many options, if any, for shocks etc for a 5 lug to turn it into an off-roader for the same reason you don't see any off road suspension options for Gremlin.

Honestly, you bought the wrong platform for an off-road truck, unless your intention is to hack everything off and custom build it from scratch.

I'd rather buy a 6 lug prerunner and convert it to a 4x4 than buy a 5-lug and try and turn it into an offroader.

Ohhhh ok I understand now. Was quite confused. I think my best bet is too put on a leveling kit with decent wheels/tires and sell it. I guess I got a new goal: get a 6 lug. Thanks for the info!!

Don’t worry man I’ll get my moneys worth out of it. I really do love it. I’m not planning on selling it until I have enough $$ for a full size truck and a 6 lug project.
Gonna keep the 5 lug for another 3-4 years and add well over 40,000 miles

Glad to hear, just bc it's a 5 lug doesn't mean it's a waste of time. U can still put some spindles on it with a spacer, and fit 31-32 inch tires with some trimming. The 6 lug rear end can be bolted in with some new leaf hangers and u can regear with an E locker in the rear. Plenty of things u can do with it until u burn it into the ground and have to resell. LMK if u still have questions, but ill be happy to see ur build as u keep it over the next 3-4 years.

Mines been driven 22k mils since I bought it in January last year, trailed and used for camping plenty of times without a hiccup. They're a great truck to have

@1stcar1stgen, I don't mean to be discouraging, just not sure if you realized the work that would be involved in converting the thing to a capable offroader.

Plenty of people have done "pre-runner" builds with their 5-lugs, and they're pretty bad ass. But they aren't a simple matter of throwing some Fox shocks on it. It's pretty much a complete tear down and replacement of the entire suspension, fenders (either fiberglass or 4x4 tacoma fenders), etc...

I guess it also depends on the type of offroading you want to do. If you just want to go on some forest roads and do some camping, my brother used to rally his 83 Rabbit GTI, bone stock (not rally racing, but typical teenager type shenanigans on forest roads), so you don't really need to sink a bunch of money into converting your 5lug if that's your plan. Or you could just do some spindles and lift shackles, but you're not going to gain anything from that compared to a stock 6 lug.

If you're wanting to build a fully capable racey prerunner, it honestly doesn't really matter what you start with. Everything is getting cut off anyway.

IMO, the only real advantage to a 2wd/Pre-runner is that you don't have to worry about CV angles when you lift it or if you want long travel. That said, the 6 lug front suspension is still going to be superior to the 5 lug style unless you highly modify it.

So: if you want a cool project, sure dive in to a 5 lug build - read up on those previously licked build to see what is usually involved.

But if your goal is to just have a fairly capable truck for going out on trails, just get a 4x4.
