Taco starts then dies! WTF???

My 08 tacoma just started this thing where it'll start then it dies like the fuel was shut off. It has 191K on it I'm the original owner and I have no clue where to start looking with this issue. Any help from all you seasoned taco brothers would be much appreciated.

 

Likely cause is your fuel pump. Leave your door open and listen under the truck (fuel pump is in the fuel tank) as you turn your key to "on" but don't start the truck. You should hear the fuel pump running for a second or two as it charges the fuel line.

If you keep your foot on the gas giving it a bit of gas does it stay running?

 

Ok sorry it's taken me a bit, thanks for all the input and help. I cleaned the MAF and haven't had the issue again yet. Also I have been leaving my key in the ignition in the garage the last few days due to my work schedule. I read on here that leaving the key in for long periods of time can cause the issue of the truck reading the chip in the key? No abnormal lights come on as of yet and I tried pushing the gas to keep it running, it made it die faster.

The issue can be resolved by installing a new ECU.

Your truck has the symptoms and the mileage.. Your ECU is shot.

 

Could be the alternator too check your battery and your alternator if your battery is still good it will start your truck but will only run till your battery dies or as everybody else says it's your fuel pump

 

I experienced the same problem with my 2007 SR5 V6. The truck would start up, and then die a few seconds later. The problem came out of nowhere while driving on the highway, the truck just shut off. No CEL present, so it made diagnostics that much harder. I started troubleshooting step by step, using the problem symptoms table in the factory repair manual. I got to the FUEL PUMP RESISTOR, and found the fault, an open circuit inside the resistor. The resistance should be between .70 and .76 ohms between the two pins on the component side of the connector, as stated in the manual. I then jumped the plug with a paper clip and it fired right up! Replaced the part, and away I went. Hope this helps someone out!

 

I leave my key in the ignition every night. Never had a problem.

Check this first.
The fuel pump is on High (NOT run through the Fuel Pump Resistor) during Start-Up and Heavy throttle ( higher RPM and Engine Load)
At Idle and Low Speed it goes through the Fuel Pump Resistor. Effectively slowing the pump.
If the Resistor is bad the truck will stall shortly after starting.

 

Wow don't ever do that.

 

I’m having this exact same issue, jumped the resistor and it did not go away. I’ve replaced the fuel pump and cleaned all the sensors. Frustrating!
