Since this is DFW and a BS thread I thought I would ask here first. So I have a 2018 TRD OffRoad Cement Access cab and I just LOVE (just kidding) the transmission on this truck. I truly enjoy the hunting of gears and how wonderful it shifts frequently as it ensures long transmission life with all of its movement. cough... cough... Ok sarcasm aside I was curious if any of you have done a 4.88 regear and if so what kind of money it cost you and at what shop? I dont feel like DIY on this one and would rather have someone who has done a lot of this type of work tackle it. I may cry when I hear the cost but I need a good cry today.

I have looked at other alternatives such as OV Tune but I believe going with 4.88s would be the best path for me since I believe this is a poor gearing issue on Toyota's part rather than tune related although they must have used both means to ensure the mpgs and other fun were where they needed\wanted.

    Thanks in advance.

Not sure on exact pricing but locally you could check with Tandem to get pricing on install. They can also get the gears for you. I'm not sure any 3rd gens in this thread have done gears. I plan to but havent had the $ to get it done. I'll likely just order 3rd members from ECGS and swap the 3rd members myself with some help(also plan adding a front locker). OV tune makes it better from what I've heard but isnt a fix. I'll know soon since I'm about to install it on my truck and still plan on doing gears someday.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will give Tandem a call and see what kind of price quote they give me. I love the truck minus all this fun. I have the AT shift module which helps a ton but still its a gear issue. Poor truck wants to go deep but someone just gave it a short leg. Or maybe I should say the leg is so tall it cant be used LOL

If you add enough weight you dont have to worry about all the down shifting. Hard to down shift when it never up shifts:rofl:. I dont remember what 6th gear is anymore and probably only use 5th when I'm going 70+, down hill with a strong tail wind it might finally go into 6th...

@Texoma is another good option. Hes a little bit of a drive since hes in Lago Vista and not the DFW area which is why I didnt say him.
While I agree and plan do 5.29's in mine some day(its another reason I bought OVtune since the next release will remove the 85mph cut off that the 5.29 gear's cause) from my research(no experience) 5.29's are great for 33" and larger and 4.88's are good for up to 33's. So if you never want to go bigger than 33 then 4.88 should be good. Thats just what the internet tells me though so hard to say how true it is.
