Seeing a lot of different info on this floating around so I'm not sure what my capacity is. I have an 07 TRD Sport 6 speed manual tranny. I have no idea if I have a towing package or not. Is there any way of me knowing what my capacity is?

Do you have the plug in the rear for trailer?

Looking at buying a travel trailer but I'm questioning how close to capacity this will bring me. Has a dry weight of 4,903 lbs and a hitch weight of 694 lbs

    Am I pushing it here?

If you have the pins you should have the tow package but it should also be on your sticker/Toyota’s drivers site as well just Incase a dealer added it when it arrived, since I really don’t tow outside of occasional small stuff I don’t think I can answer the how close question

Thanks, I'm gna check it out. Hopefully someone here will know what the numbers look like. If I do get this thing I'll be bringing it x-country, from CT to AZ so I don't want anything to get squirrely

    Towing capacity is around 6,500lbs.
If you have the Towing Package.

    GVWR is around 11,100lbs.
You’ll need to refer to sticker on the side of the opening of the drivers door.
Your actual GVWR will be printed there.
    GVWR= Truck+cargo+Total Trailer weight
( The stuff you put inside the trailer counts towards weight too )

650lbs. Is the maximum allowable Tounge weight for these trucks.
Looks like you are definitely going to be “pushing it” there.

I wouldn’t want to tow the trailer you are looking at any farther than I had to with my Tacoma.

You're definitely nearing the upper end of what can work. You'll eventually get every different reply possible, but most of the replies will be from people that have never done it, never would have the guts to try it or anything else different for that matter, and they'll scream how unsafe it is knowing nothing about it other than what they've read. There was a very recent thread on here about the same topic.

My GVWR says 5350 lbs. Is that right?

And I do have the 6 pin connector in the rear

Pop the hood and look for this. If you have this, you have the tow package. There are many opinions about towing a trailer that heavy with a Taco, but 60% of TW members will tell you that’s too big and too heavy.

    Yes I do.

    20200302_094231.jpg

    Oil cooler, right?

So what am I risking if I do hook this thing up and I'm right near capacity? I have the new TSB pack with a wheelers AAL but I dont know if that matters much. I'm going back to school so I'll be towing it cross country but then leaving it there so it wont be hooked up all the time.

Does GVWR mean my max capacity I can hook up is 5350 lbs? I thought these trucks could handle 6500. I've towed stuff but never anything close to this weight

GVWR is gross vehicle weight rating and should be around 5600 for double cab, GCWR is Gross combined weight rating and is the 11360 people talk about

Right. Thanks. Was wondering why that wasn't on the sticker. What's GAWR?

Also, does this being a 6 spd manual make any difference vs an automatic tranny?

Towing capacity per SAE J2807 is mostly limited by powertrain, that's why the Tacoma towing pkg adds an oil cooler but has zero suspension changes.

With a trailer near the weight limit, you'll be keeping the engine revved higher to maintain power (which the engine can handle). Trailer sway may get uncomfortable at higher speeds because the trailer will be heavier than the truck.

Gross axle weight rating, you will have one for front and one for rear and they won’t be the same. That shouldn’t make much of a difference in tow between Mt and AT on paper, in real life your doing the work and not the truck so take it easy and your fine. I have towed minor stuff with the Tacoma and bigger stuff with a auto 350. Take your time and don’t rush/ feel rushed by others and you won’t make mistakes and will be fine

Thanks, guys. I'm planning on a few renovations inside the trailer that will strip down maybe a few hundred pounds but I dont want to rely on that.

Is the hitch weight a deal breaker, though? This trailer is 694 lbs. I'm pretty sure ours is below that

Also, any recommendations on a brake controller?

Towing capacity is the same for AT and MT on a 2007: 3500lbs without tow package, 6500lbs with tow package. GVWR is also the same for AT and MT on a 2007: 5100lbs for reg. cab, 5350lbs for acc. cab, and 5450lbs for dbl. cab.

Tow package includes the factory Class-III hitch, 7-pin trailer wiring (with trailer brake wiring excluding the controller), larger battery (if not equipped with the Cold-Area spec), 130A alternator (vs. 100/90A for AT/MT), engine oil cooler, transmission oil cooler (AT only).

On trucks without the factory tow package, there was an accessory hitch available from Toyota which included a 4-pin connector.

Being a MT you wouldn’t really have to worry about the Trans Temp. like us AT guys.
But reverse in the 6MT is not really “towing” friendly. Some guys go the 2WD Lo Mod. to help.

    Here is the DIY
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2wd-lo-mod.195424/

There was a PnP at one time. @Up2NoGood
Last I heard he was selling what was left and then there would not be any more built.
You have to see if he has any left?

I’m still sticking with my opinion of, that is a lot of trailer to be towing.
I’m AT, so I guess I have to be a bit more concerned then you MT guys.
Still, I’d be trying to find a better rig to tow with, but sometimes you have to work with what you got.

If you do buy it, let us know how it’s working out for you.
A lot of guys do it. I’m just not one of them.
