I picked up a set of '19 headlights to mod and install on my 2020. Planning on the BHLM and possibly a retrofit and some other tweaks. I'm familiar with the modification process, but am wondering how to tint this portion of the headlight Amber (not the grill, but the area directly behind the grill). In this pic it almost looks like a cover was added. Know if someone sell covers?... or was the grill painted with translucent orange/amber spray painted?

There is a Tamaya model paint that I have used to tint clear bulbs to amber. It should work nicely for what you want. The big tips are do not shake it to mix and use at least two coats.

I think I found the paint you speak of. Do you know if thats how people are pulling off whats shown in my picture? For whatever reason it looks like a cover, as opposed to a painted reflector. The sheet in your pic look like an amber stage lighting gel. It is impossible to tell for sure. I thought that you wanted to paint the grille, not insert a sheet.

I do believe that is the stuff. I used the liquid version and a brush for miniature bulbs.

Yea I actually want the grill part black, but the area directly behind it amber/orange, like in that pic. From what I can tell without disassembling the headlights, the area behind the grill only has a chrome reflector. Not sure if painting that is a good idea. The picture I posted almost looks like a cover of some sort, but maybe it is just the reflector painted.

Looks like the pic was taken with the amber bulb illuminated and your just seeing the reflection off the chrome.

See the thread from @no vtec 4me . I know that's one of the mods he offers for his BHLM (Amber or Smoked acrylic turn signal cover). I think I've seem posts before where he just sells you the amber insert if you're looking to do your own mod. I may be mistaken, so better to ask him. Good luck:

    Don't paint the reflector.

    Just get the sheet.

It’s a molded orange tinted acrylic placed in front of the chrome reflector housing. I did them in some of my first BHLM’s. You can also do smoked as well. It’s a PASSIVE lens, and does not degrade the turn signal output very much.

What thickness acrylic did you use (not too thick to mold, but thick enough to hold up)? Something like this?

Contacted him - he does sell them separate. Will likely just pick up a set from him. Thanks!

Heat it up and press it against on the cover to let it form. Once formed, I used hot glue gun to attach it on the back of the cover

If using spray, I would suggest something with more of an orange tint. Tamiya Orange lens tint works well
