Rated front recovery point with skid plate

Hi all, I'm new to the forum. I just purchased a 2020 OR and I'm trying to get a minimal amount of armor to help cover me since I'm such a novice. I've ordered RCI sliders and skids and now I want to add a front recovery point (I've already purchased a receiver recovery point). This one looks nice and affordable:

My question is... will this work with the RCI engine skid plate here?

From the picture it doesn't really seem like it would but from what I've read that skid doesn't require removing any of the factory tow or tie-down points and I think that's what the BP point uses. Does anyone know?

If not, do you have other recommendations for front recovery? I'm not interested in a front bumper yet since I think I'd want to wait until I could upgrade my suspension as well and I want to keep it as close to stock as possible until I get really comfortable.

 

It looks like those mounts are compatible to me. If I'm looking at it right, the BPF recovery points attach to the three bolt holes shown in the RCI pic below (where OEM ones are located):

However, the pic on the BPF site makes them look like they might be mounted more centrally.

That one looks nice, but it's nearly as much as the mobtown recovery bar. Is there a reason you think it would be better?

Most likely I'm going to get the BP recovery point since I'm trying to get something for a trip in 3 weeks and the mobtown lead time is 4 weeks. But I'll likely be upgrading.

 

If you are going to use it as a recovery point I'd want it to be as strong as possible, a failure would be a terrible thing to have while actually using it.

 

$250 vs. $350 (over $400 with shipping) isn't "nearly as much" in my book, but also the ARB one is widely used, readily available and can be installed without cutting the bumper.

If I'm going to be spending $400 on a bumper-like thing I'm going to be really tempted to just get a bumper. The ARB recovery point should also be compatible with most aftermarket bumpers too.

 

I know the BP point says "heavy duty" but it has a pretty modest weight limit and looks like it was engineered to a price point. I can't imagine feeling good about jerk strapping someone out of the mud with that. Maybe a gentle straight pull but nothing more. My gut feeling. The ARB looks like it would pull a tank out of a well.

 

I have the ARB setup with an RCI front skid. Pictures are in the ARB recovery point thread.

As far as I know, the ARB is the only point that actually has a weight rating and connects directly to the frame. All of the others seem to only connect to the subframe which is nothing but 2/3 weldnuts inside that boxed piece of thin steel. (the OEM OR hook or it's aftermarket replacements)

Downside to the ARB is the installation isn't super easy, weight, and it reduces your front approach angle a bit.

Fair enough. I can't seem to find a model number on ARB's site. Amazon claims that point doesn't fit my truck.

 

I picked mine up yesterday from 4wheelparts. It's beefy. It's also rated and designed for angled pulling if needed. And it's 5 bolts in the frame.

 

If you’re looking for something that you can truely use as a recovery point without worrying about damage.
Go with the ARB at a minimum, that BP Fabricating recovery point is useless for a real recovery and a hard pull on it will rip it right out of the frame. I would strongly suggest the Mobtown one if it were me

Good to know. Looks like I can get it shipped to my local store and pick up next business day (I might just stop in and take a look). The biggest problem with the bumper solution now is me needing it for a trip in 3 weeks. I don't plan to use it (who does?) but I don't want to be unprepared.

 

Somehow my local 4wp had it in stock, but sounds like you could get it pretty quick or from Amazon Prime. I just picked up a snatch strap, tree strap, shackles, etc. just to be prepared. Make sure you grab a hitch recovery point too. The Factor55 is nice, light and rated to twice that of a standard shackle. Smittybilt makes one too for a lot less, but it's not rated as high. Don't forget a good hitch pin.

 

If you're going to drop that much on a recovery point, why not just spend a bit more and get a half bumper like:

That ARB recovery point is what I'd go with now that I know it exists. That thing is beefy as F looking and looks sick too

 

Cool - I'm sure it's probably fine, I'm just hard on equipment, as they say.

 

What’s wrong with the factory recovery hook?

 

Everything I've read says it's fine for towing on a flat surface but isn't meant for recovery situations with high shock load.
