Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Took my ‘19 Sport in for scheduled maintenance service today. Advisor asked of any complaints. I mentioned all the norms, trans shifting, etune programming, etc. I said I’ve been a Toyota guy since 1980 so I pretty much know these trucks except for these new electronics laden ones. Talked about my head unit locking up a couple times. He checked and my truck needed the latest software update. They installed it. But main convo was how people complain about the trucks on these forums. Said you wouldn’t believe how people don’t bring theirs in and check for software updates. He compared it to your home computer. How would it perform if you never ran or had it install automatic updates. Thought it was a good point.

Remember when there was no big internet, and you got a new game for your nintendo, or sega... and it just worked... didnt need updates, didnt need to be reflashed for shit software, car ecms didnt need programming, and you rarely hear of issues like we have with current tech.

With updateable programming the engineers got lazy, they ship half done products and say we will fix it later, we just want to start selling it now. This is why everything has to run a software update now to perform how it should of out of the box.

Updates are designed to fix security flaws. They should not be used to make something work the way it should of when you got it.

    /end of rant

BTW, I am a computer programmer

Couldn't have said it better. I love my truck, but some aspects certainly seem half cocked.

You have a very good service adviser, some of us are not told everything there is about our modern trucks, although upgrading the electronic systems in our truck just like upgrading a computer software to stay up to date makes totally sense, we are told that many things we experience in our trucks it normal :notsure:

I bet if I pay that ridiculous 185 dollar diagnostic fee they always mention when calling for an appointment, I bet they would duplicate it real fast.

I understand the diagnosis fee because the system cost money and stuff, but the price they charge for it is ridiculous

That was the main point of this thread:
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/software-update-for-the-manual.562550/

Even with people begging for the dealers to do Health Checks and leading them through it, many more were refused than taken care of.

If you go in and agree to pay a diag fee, they have to look for the problem, if they dont find the problem then the tech doesnt usually get paid because people raise such a stink about paying $100+ to be told nothing is wrong. So, the tech will find anything related to the problem and say that its the fix, sometime it actually is the fix, sometimes its not... in the case of it not being the fix, they have to look again for free.

If its under warranty, they dont really need to look because their pay is so low to diagnose to begin with (TSB have zero diag time paid, the tech is just supposed to know). So they will dismiss the issue and say its normal.

I know how it works, doesn't mean I have to like it or think it's great way to do business.

It is a terrible way to do business, but when you dont publish your repair manuals for independent shops to get or supply ways to scan or flash the computers, it doesnt matter if your business is corrupt, cause people have to come to you. Most companies have switched to this and it ruins the repair business, farmers cant fix their tractors anymore, people cant fix their electronics anymore, everything is being locked down and there is nothing we can do about it with "right to repair" bills.

My dishwasher broke a few years back, it needed a new control panel. I called and they told me it was $400 for the part, and they would only sell it to a authorized repairman to install. The dishwasher was only $500 to begin with... so I got a new one (different brand) and threw the old one in the dumpster... total waste, all it needed was a small circuit board to work again.

It’s called planned obsolescence. Society is now adding appliances, electronics, etc. to our landfills.

I had a capacitor go out on my AC unit. I went to the supply house and they wouldn't sell it to me because I wasn't a licensed electrician. So, I went on the Amazon and ordered the part, had it here in 2 days and paid a fraction of what the supply house wanted. To top it all off, I TRIED to just hire an ac repairman to come out and fix it. I was fine paying more to have him do it. The problem is, he said they aren't allowed to replace just the capacitor, they have to do the motor too. He said he wasn't willing to charge me for motor replacement when mine was just fine. (I mean he said he would if I really wanted him to but was straight forward in saying the motor was just fine) He tried to put the part on order at the supply house for me, they still wouldn't do it.

haha, I bought some really nice Maytag appliances (Dishwasher, microwave, fridge, etc) about 5 years ago. Well, they're already having issues and need to be repaired/replaced. The problem with repair is it will cost me almost as much as a new one to repair it...
