Really thinking about getting OVTune.... I need more input

I've been considering getting a tune for a bit now. My previous rig had the 4.7L V8 and I just feel like there's no get up with my 4.0L especially if I'm hauling materials for work.

I'm just confused on the total cost because I need a certain amount of credits? And then I need to buy a tune or it comes with a tune?

I'm looking for HP gains. It'd be awesome to gain MPG too but I'm not sure if they go hand in hand. I've tried scrolling through the OVTune thread but there is waaaaay too much information not really relating to my questions.. or I haven't been able to find them.

My truck has an oil catch can, an AFE drop in dry filter, and the modded secondary air pump filter. Also thinking of adding a new exhaust for some more HP but thats out of budget if i do get the tune.

I have an OV Tune. It's a nice little addition, but it certainly doesn't reinvent the truck. If you were thinking about getting a pedal commander or something like that, OV Tune is a better way to spend your money. I have an automatic transmission, and it made for firmer shifts and a little more power, but there isn't a whole lot that can be done. You certainly won't get more power and better mileage. One or the other, and not a ton of either. I'm glad I did it, but keep your expectations realistic.

 

I just uninstalled mine and have a hand held I am going to post up. I think its easier to transfer if your interested. Only did it because installing a S/C with HP tuner software

Oh i'm not expecting to gain a shitload of power, but I figured it will atleast give it better shift points which would make the tacoma scoot a bit faster lol. Also getting 33" tires soon and I know I've heard guys on here say a tune will help counter the extra weight of the tires

 

HPTuners is also another option.

 

I was going to ask in my post what are the main differences/ benefits of either one?

 

I did 4:56 gears as well as the tune. The gears are a far better power adder, especially with 33's. I'm running 32's, and really like the 4:56's.

 

I'm new to the gear thing... how expensive is it?

 

I also went the route when I did it. OV Tune first and it was noticeable but not insane. better throttle response and shifting on the 2nd gen. That combined with 4.56 I thought was the perfect balance for 285's or near 33's. Gears along for a 4wd are $1000 on avg plus install. Sometimes you can score some deals. But you will like the tun based on stock. Ping me if your interested in the handheld OV Tune and we can see whats involved in the migration/cost. First would make sure you have a supported ECU.
