Spark Plug Change Frequency

The owners manual say to change every 30,000 miles so I guess I'm due now...I average 70,000 miles/year...

Do you guys follow the manual's advice and is it an easy DIY?

First I admit I'm guilty, I forgot to change the plugs on the 2011, twice. First it was in 2014 at 120,000, I know that was way too long and I was surprised the old plugs didn't look bad. I replaced them with the Toyota official part then completely forgot about it again. Had replacements for a couple of months and the virus gave me some free time so put them in. Even worse the clock now reads 320,000, that's another 200,000 since the last change. Again the old plugs don't look too bad with little gap wear and good color on all cylinders. I think the engine idles a little more even but could be my imaginative. I simply don't understand how plugs could last this long; have not seen a drop in gas mileage or starting. This time I put in Denso Iridiums in case I forget again. All I can say is Toyota Engineering must be damn good to take this level of lack of maintenance. I drive so many miles I change the oil only every 20,000 miles so use the high mileage 20,000 mile Mobil 1 synthetic and still don't need to add oil between changes. Anyone else done this with plugs and got away with it?

 

I changed mine at 70k. 30k is overkill and recommended by Toyota to get people to pay for service.
Kind of like back in the day when they recommended 3month/3000mi oil changes

 

I wouldn't worry too much missing a spark plug change. I doubt 'old' spark plugs would do any long term damage.

However, if your concerned about the longevity of the engine, I'd reconsider the 20,000 mile oil change interval. Before Uber, I'd get in a taxi and ask most drivers how many KMs they had on the engine. Wasn't uncommon to see 700,000+ KMs. Oil would be changed once per week.

 

I replaced mine with iridium plugs (another debated topic) and pull mine out every 30k to look at them.

Oem was replaced at 35k, and so far at 600k miles they were fine.

I plan to check again at about 90k and likely replace.

 

I have 103k on the block and changed them once. Iridium were a no go for my truck. Ran like shit.

 

Changed 3 times now in 12 years 129000 miles . What I need to do is clean the MAF and throttle body

 

There is a guy in North Carolina who was at 1.3 million miles on his 2008 Tacoma as of last fall, I'm assuming it is still running. That's miles, not KM. He changes oil once a month, which works out to about 10,000 miles. He didn't change the factory plugs until he was at 700,000 miles.

I'm at 203,000. Changed the factory plugs at 95,000, and again at 167,000. I used to change my oil every 10,000, but that was when I was putting 20,000 miles a year on it. I do it every 6 months now regardless of miles, but it usually works out to around 5000 miles. I don't want to leave oil in longer than 6 months regardless of miles.

 

The last time I changed mine at 30,000, they looked fine. Decided I'd go 50,000 on this set. Now that I think of it, I don't remember when that was.....

 

30k is for the 4.0 only. The 2.7 is 100k

 

Every two years.....don't forget to change out the PVC valve when your there....and while your at it clean your MAF sensor!

 

Am I the first to notice you have a 2019. If there iridiums should be 100-120K. I guess everyone like my self the post was in 2015, lol.

 

Hello...yes sir I now have a 2019 but the comment of mine that you quoted was from 2015 when I had my 2nd gen.

 

I do plugs every 30K miles. It's a simple procedure that doesn't require a trip to the dealer.

Also change my diff fluid on a 30K mile interval. (05-08 Tacomas have a "clutch type" LSD, and require this interval)
