Curious if anyone out there has any body rust starting up anywhere on their Taco? I'm not talking about rust caused by damage, or stone-chip that went unattended, but wheel-well rust, bottom of the doors, etc... just naturally occurring rust from water/salt/etc...

My truck is an '08 and I live in Canada. I've had the truck sprayed by Krown since new, so it should be fine, but I figured it's three years old now, and this summer it might be time for a closer inspection, and repair if necessary.

I figure the wheel wells may be a bad spot for rust to start, as the flares fold in, and create an ideal rust breeding ground. And by the time you notice it, it's too far-gone and time for a new fender.

Yeah, I see a lot of older vehicles here in Edmonton that are still in pretty good shape. No salt used on the roads here makes a HUGE difference.

I'm from Ontario, where they salt the roads like crazy. 5 years, and most cars start to rust out.

KROWN is a rust-inhibitor. It's HUGE in Ontario, again because of the salt. You get your car sprayed with KROWN annually. It's like a gel almost, but it "creeps" meaning it actually moves around, works it's way into the seams, etc.... Pretty cool stuff actually.

Can you recommend a shop in town to get the 3M applied? I was about to get it done in Ontario before we moved, but just didn't have the time.

I live in hawaii, we have serious rust issues. Not quite the same as northern climes though.
I've not seen rust on the first or 2nd generation trucks. Or really anything within the last 10-15 years unless there was damage. Had a tiny bubble on my scion where a rock hit it.

That magnetic baked on base coat that all companies use now is much better than old bodies. I've heard industry people saying the paint is just for looks now-a-days.
They did have trouble with paint adhering to it in the mid 90s though.. you've seen the trucks/cars with no paint and a grey undercoat.

Ding it down to bare metal, which is hard to do, and it's over. That's why everyone has the perforation warranty, it's a joke. without a paint scratch (which voids it) you can not get rust.

BUT, you get holes down to metal,

:pccoffee: 9 years later, what is the situation looking like on 2nd gens located in the normal rust belts

i was looking at a new Corolla hatchback the other day and asked the salesguy if the new cars are prone to rust after a lengthy period of time without dedicated cleaning
he said yes , they are, will definitely rust through in the lower doors, wheel openings. etc.

what about the 2nd gens of 10-15 years of age now

what spots and where are they popping up at? ... if any are??
a relative has a really nice red '11 regular cab that has not been 'totally kept clean' during the winters and quite concerned about this, especially behind the large fender flare things, tailgate, and bottom of doors/doorjams and any other normal weak spots on trucks

The frame condition is a much more serious matter than the body. I know you asked about the body, just wanted to make sure you were aware of the frame issue.

frame is undercoated and starting an FF regimen onit underneath

the body panels can be a MAJOR expense i am thinking if they start perforating behind those hidden liners and tailgate area

you shoulda seen what was in that trap area right in front of the doors, hidden behind a piece of rubber, where the water drains from the cowl behind the hood

piles of wet soaked leaves and other dirt buildup over nearly 9 years, it was NASTY!@!

There are weep holes in the bottom of your doors and on your rocker panels in the pinch seam.
I spray up into those once per year, first with Fluid Film, then I follow up with a little WD-40 to thin it down a little. You don't want to plug those holes. Use the little red tube, do it when it's hot out and that mixture will creep into the small areas about which you are concerned.
Every couple of months, if I don't wash my truck, I actually have to wipe down the outside of my doors. You can see the trails of oil creeping up the outside. It'll even creep up the outside 4 or 5 inches. I think that's good evidence that it's doing the same thing inside the doors.
I did this on my '98 T-100 and after 17 years of ownership in the Midwest, the rockers and cab corners were still solid. I neglected the doors and they were starting to rust out at the bottom of the door skin where it wraps around the body of the door. My nephew is still driving that truck. He sent me a text a couple of months ago, just rolled over 300,000 miles. That 3.4 engine wasn't exciting but it was a good little engine.

i am honestly most interested in IF they will rust if nothing is ever done, and what pics are out there on TW for 2nd gen trucks 10-15 years old
... have plenty of pics of 1st gen trucks from the salvage lots with major body panel perforations found, maybe Toyota body panels on 2nd gens were made better :notsure:

will this eventually happen to a 2nd gen if a strict routine hosing during the winter is not adherred to?
is there any proof out there yet that it has happened after 10+ years?
this is a 96 taco from IA/NE border

maybe the 2nd gen fender flares help in this respect but i just don't really know for certain

    IMG_0085.jpg
it already has rusty screws / bolts on the flares and not even 45k on this truck yet

I'm sorry, I was just commenting to the OP to make sure he was up on the frame situation. Not what you are up to with yours. But good for you.

Didn't need to see yours. Already did this writeup on how to fix it, based on my own truck.
