Bakflip G2 vs Fold-A-Cover G4

I know there are alot of threads reguarding the G2, negative and positive. I searched and could find none on the G4. It looks to be a good alternative to the g2 and you retain your factory rail system. I called a dealer today and they said they are 995.00 !!! Does anybody have one and what are your opinions on it?
Im strongly considering the BAKFLIP as 1000.00 for a fold a cover seems steep to put it nicely

Might want to keep on searching dealers then. This is where I got my Bakflip and just looked up their G4. http://www.autoaccessoriesgarage.co...-A-Cover-G4-Tonneau-Cover/_Toyota-Tacoma-2010 They're pretty much comparable in price with the Bakflip.

 

Thanks alot has anybody had both? Which would you guys recommend? Do you guys with the BAKFLIP like it or does it leak alot like what I've read? Thanks again for the help.

 

I've got the F1 and I really like it. I'd probably guess it's about 95% leakproof. I'll get some droplets that manage to squeeze in through the sides and by the top corners at the tailgate. Other than that, the middle of the bed stays bone dry.

 

I used to run the G4 and miss it to this day. It barely leaked in the corners, but nothing bad. Might go back to it after I get rid of my bestop camper.

 

I have the G4 on my 2011 DC. Works great so far, no leaks and great latching/locking system.

Been pretty happy with my Bakflip. No leaks so far. The G4 seems pretty good but it does sit higher than the Bakflip, that's why the factory rail cleats are preserved. The Bakflip doesn't need a locking key because the pull cable are access with the tailgate down. I have a PopnLock to keep the tailgate/cover locked. Installation took less than an hour. Only negative for the Bakfip is you lose the side tie down cleats but the front cleats are still usable. Bought mine off eBay 8mos ago for $625 shipped.

 

I'm trying to decide if a tonneau is what I want and I'm considering the Fold-A-Cover G4 Elite and the Extang Solid Fold or Extang Encore (if it ever comes available).

From what I have seen this guy has the best deals on the G4 and Extang. He doesn't carry the Bakflip. Here is the direct link to the Fold-A-Cover and includes promotions. He also sells the Pop-A-Locks and weather stripping to seal the tailgate.

I like the functionality of the G4 the best, with the access at the front and rear of the bed, but if you read the thread I posted a couple posts up you will see that self installation can be iffy. Also, it doesn't remove and store quite as easy as the Extang Solid Fold (predecessor to Encore). Although one guy mentioned that you could probably change out the regular nuts at the center of the G4 for wing nuts and make the removal easier and without tools (information is in that thread).

The Solid Fold is more expensive and I'm sure the Encore will be too, but it removes quickly and installs more easily. There is very little hardware to install, but you lose the access to the front of the bed (which may not be that great of a feature) that the G4 provides. Below is a good review of the Extang Solid Fold. Extang website states that the Encore will be available later this year (which is only two more months?)

I ruled out the Bakflip due to the abundance of negative reviews and the "band-aid" like look of the drain tubes to keep water out of the bed. I don't recall how easy the self install is for the Bakflip.

Finally the "sit on top" tonneaus have a problem the tailgates on our trucks sit lower than the bedrails or bed sides creating a gap. I don't think the Bakflip has this issue, but the G4, Solid Fold, and Encore will. Most people have reported minimal leaking from that area, but it is something to look at and it's mentioned in G4 and Solid Fold review threads. They also note that the site on tops have a problem with the small channels in the plastic on top of the bed rails/sides, but again minimal.

Just some observations I've made from researching all of this for my potential purchase.

 

Check the price on the G4 Elite from Truck Alterations. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

 

I added a set of D rings to each rail bolt. Now I've got three tie down points on each side.

 

Great idea!. Can you get the D-rings at Home Depot or Lowe's?

 

You might find some there, but I had bought a set a while ago from that one Army surplus store online...the links that you come across when you search for the added D ring mod to the bed. If I wasn't on my phone right now I could probably have found it real quick.

Thats what I need to do....Realized it when I went to tie down smaller items in my bed.

I live in Oregon where it rains all the damned time and mine doesn't leak. I carry luggage and golf clubs all the time in mine with no worries. If you install it yourself get a friend to help. I really like the functionality of the G4. Easy to install, easy to fold up, I can get the front or the back and it only takes a few mintues to remove. And if you install the Pop and Lock (can also be ordered from the same guy) it makes the bed pretty secure.
