DIY - Build and install a Bussmann RTMR Fuse/Relay Block

After a year or so of parts sitting around Bussmann is in and done!

 

Going to try this next week. Still hunting down some parts.

 

Been parts gathering for this. Almost have everything to start. Anyone have any pics of install in a manual transmission 1st gen and/or a manual transmission 2nd gen with Atrak? Most of the brackets I’ve found will only work in automatics and I currently don’t have a brake.

Well here's my weekend project done, just have some cable management to do but its in.

Did you buy everything bulk? I want to do this but it ends up being a lot with tools and minimum orders

 

Yeah I bought in bulk for making mine which I'm glad I did because having the spare parts did come in handy with connectors that the crimp didn't hold or I had to redo or remake the connector. For example the leads coming off the bottom of the Bussmann I followed the guide and made the 8 or 6 inch lengths, turns out that theres really limited space under the mounting area because the wheel well comes up a lot higher than I thought so I ordered 25 feet of 10 gauge red and black and remade all my leads to about 16 inches so that I can actually manipulate them while things are installed and not have to tear the whole thing out.

 

So what did this whole project end up costing you? I've priced it out and the tools alone were close to 350, granted then you always have them.

 

TBH I stopped tracking the cost but in total probably $400ish but the out come and knowledge I would say is the benefit. I know what and how everything is wired up, what parts I would need if something goes wrong and how to troubleshoot the thing.

SP9100 is the knowledge. Did you buy all the tools recommended by OP or did you just make due in some places?

 

I bought a few because I had some of the common ones already. Heres the ones I bought and then some of them I bought better versions of because of the number of times you do the same process over and over (wire stripping SMH). Im pretty sure I listed everything but definitely ask about anything else I may have left out.

1. Solder Gun & Solder Iron *the soldering iron I had from before but is a cheap 25 watt from Radioshack (RIP) the iron was providing enough heat for the gauge wires I was dealing with so I bought the gun and it was a WORLD of difference go with the gun and watch some videos on how to solder.
2. Small Precision Flathead Screwdriver *had from a kit before
3. Metri Weather Pack Crimps I bought the cheaper ones of these worked out just fine
4. Miscellaneous cutting tools *scissors and utility blade

 

I really like that mounting bracket you made. Way smaller than the Pelfy one everyone has

 

Its actually the TacomaPros mount but I did have to drill the mounting holes and then sanded, primer (you need self-etching since its aluminum) and painted it.

I’ve found that if you buy the parts from mouser, you can get what you need cheaper (more expensive per individual item, but you don’t have to buy a minimum order of say, 50 of which you might use 3 or 4) it’s worth getting the catalog from Waytek and comparing the manufacturer item numbers on both Waytek and Mouser.

Edit: the tools are expensive either way... I’m planning on making a few of them for my friends to offset the cost of the tools.

I had to buy a bunch of stuff this morning and originally found everything on waytek, and put it in my cart. After looking up the mfg part numbers on mouser from the waytek catalog and reducing my orders from the minimum of 50 or 25 for the parts I was interested in down to 10, I was able to shave $100 off my order. It’s pretty time consuming to do it that way, but I feel like it’s worth it.

 

That’s awesome. I didn’t even think to do that. I bought one from him for the automatic and have been planning to just cut a hole for the master cylinder.

 

I cut my hole today for the automatic one. Used a 2” hole saw and had to take the mc loose to get it on, but I think it’s going to turn out pretty well
