I use one. Like anything, the answer is usually "depends on your goal with the vehicle."

Honestly if you're like most folks and trade in your cars prior to 100k, then you really don't have to do anything. You don't have to change any trans fluids or do much else maintenance wise and honestly could change your oil every 15k and still you would never notice. It will run well until you trade it in and move on with life.

But if your goal is making it one of those Toyota's that run 200k+, then decisions do matter. My goal is for it to last until I retire, which is 17 years. So I use a catch can, change the oil every 5k, already changed out the front and rear diff, etc.

I'm with this solid advice, if you wanna keep it then maintain it like you will have it forever.

 

Learn about how port injection is used on the FKS engine before you go spending your money. Not all DI engines need a catch can. Of course, if you just like the cool looks, go ahead.

 

Neighbor has 2 3rd gens with 400k miles between the 2. Tows and hauls daily. Doesn’t have catch cans. My other 2 Tacomas, 1st gen with 305k and 2nd gen with 265k, didn’t have catch cans. Regular maintenance is key to keeping these trucks on the road. It’s really that simple.

OCCs can be useful in DI only setups for sure and in particular boosted applications. Been there done that. Because these motors have at least port injection/direct injection, fuel is going to wash down the intake valves and keep the gunk down.

This is pure conjecture - But if your goal is making it one of those Toyota's that run 200k+, then decisions do matter... So I use a catch can....

OCCs are relatively new, unless you have statistics to the contrary, I imagine that very few of those high mileage examples have run OCCs, and muchless attribute some parallel between OCCs and longevity. I don't how you think some engine that was developed by teams of engineers to the tune of years and millions of dollars is going to exclude some crucial aftermarket $30 hunk of a metal can and tubes.

 

I think it's reasonable that "if" you installed can and "if" it was catching sludge that it's certainly doing a job to help reduce maintenance and to some small degree improve performing (or long-term loss thereof). However if the can don't catch a thing you have wasted your money but bling bling ain't it purdy.

 

Catch cans are absolutely necessary for your Tacoma.....

No, but might consider it.
At 25k not sure if it’s too late by now, but at least have been changing the oil every 5k.

Look at my previous post about my neighbor who owns 2 3rd gens with 400k total mileage. He changes the oil every 6-7k and follows the service intervals in the manual. Wallyworld Supertech fluids, except for the trans. It’s pretty simple. No need to overthink or overcomplicate things.
