Yeah, all that computer stuff is probably OK, plugging wires, programming, reprogramming, removing & replacing the dash isn't a problem for some people, but it is for me. BUT, my speedometer reads off the rear tire rotation, The rear wheel sensor tells the speedo that every rotation of my 31" tire is 8', & speedo reads accurate from that. if I go up to a 33" tire, every rotation of the tire will be 8'6", how hard could it be for a Mfg. to make a rear wheel sensor, for a 33" tire, that would tell the speedo that every tire rotation would be 8"6", instead of the 31" tire 8' per tire rotation. Just install a rear wheel sensor for the new diameter tire you are running. Replace the rear wheel sensor & all would be good, plug & play, no reprogramming, dash removal, just a simple wheel sensor replacement & all is good. Rear wheel sensor should be way cheaper than one of those scan gauge things, but if it was just as expensive, the simplicity of the installation would be well worth the cost. PLEASE, Why not?

Not sure every tire manufacturers 33” tire isn’t exactly 33”..? So there would have to be a sensor made for each individual tire.

It would be nice, I do agree with you on that point. I'd much rather tune the source instead of intercepting the signal at the gauge cluster. I have an OBD2 reader linked with my head unit that can read the VSS and it displays the wrong MPH, which in turn, makes all the other readings incorrect (such as MPG). I'd rather not have to flash the trucks onboard computer, but that seems to be the ultimate solution to this ongoing issue.

Agreed, No way to ever make it perfect. Like he said, a worn out tire will be appx. 2/3" less diameter (2" less in circumference) than a new tire. For say a Taco, Mfg make sensors in 1" increments, 28" thru 38", would cover most. When you buy your tires, get your wheel sensor for your new tire size, (as close as possible per mfg.), & you're finished. Shouldn't be near as complicated and expensive as the Scan gauge, computerized programming, dash removal, wiring in thing thing. Replace the wheel sensor & you're done, as close as we have now. Just my opinion.

I do have it on a second gen. It should work on an auto but that hasn't been confirmed yet. The only reason it may not work is if they moved the speed signal wire, but I'm fairly certain they haven't.

Mine is 2 mph slow at highway speed and it's been that way since I switched to larger tires 10 years ago. Not enough of a difference for me to care about it. After a while it becomes second nature to look at the speedo and know that I'm going 2 mph faster than the reading.

I actually wrote that wrong. MY speedometer shows about 5 mph slower with my big tires and 4.88 gears.
I can certainly make the adjustment easy enough in my head but it just irritates me that it is off and I have to do that. I don't know how much it is off at other speeds above and below 70 mph.

ps. driving the speed limit is against my religion. I usually stay within 10-12 mph of the posted limit. I'm so ashamed :spy:

I would suggest doing what I posted above. Using the Hypertech, hook it up but leave a 6' USB cable attached to it secured under the dash. Then using a laptop you "should" be able to play with your tire/gear settings to get that number dialed in. With that said, it's never going to be perfect. You'll dial it in, then in 20k miles, it'll be out of calibration due to the tread loss on your tires as they wear down. If you can get it to where you're within 4-8 mph when crusing at 75 mph (safely), you'll be good to go. At 50, I'm about 2 mph off. It's difficult to get your true rated speed when you're tweaking your ratios. I used a Garmin GPS to give me my true ground speed, but even that wasn't without a margin of error.

You could get a scanguage it plugs into the ob2 connector it can read the corrected speedometer along with several other parameters. I really like being able to see actual water and transmission temps with it.

I've had one of those for years but don't use it very often (mostly for reading codes in other vehicles). I think it will show the same reading as the speedo but you can manually set it up or down a few MPH to compensate.

I just want to clarify that the scangauge doesn't correct the actual speedometer on the truck. You can have the SG display the speed, and adjust it accordingly to display the correct speed. Once you do, your trucks gauge will still be off as well as your odometer.

the extra 6' cable is a good idea.
But if the Dakota is half the price I likely would prefer to save the extra 100 bucks and get some bait and gas for my boat and do a little fishing in the bay. They don't give away those live shrimp anymore. LOL
