Good morning my brothers and sisters,
Last week I noticed a flake on my right rear passenger door (behind the window) I thought could have been due to a rock or debris, but yesterday I walked to my truck after a 10 hour shift and more than half of that being heavy tropical rain to notice almost 1/4 of the surfaces paint was removed or peeled. I’m blown away by this discovery.
I understand that there are some models that possibly have a paint recall due to peeling, but I haven’t checked my vin yet.
    Just venting more than anything...
    Original flake.

Not sure it much matters. My wife's '19 Corolla, produced in Canada, falls under the additional coverage.

Just got off the phone with corporate and they said there are no documented issues with 2017 Super White paint. I set an appointment for a local dealership on Wednesday, to look at the issue and hopefully document it further.
The B2B is expired by 9k miles so I doubt there will be any resolution. I guess I needed to just raise my blood pressure this week.

The only reason I asked is something I read a while back that Mexico uses more human labor for many of the factory processes, including paint.

    Texas uses more robots.

Your thin paint issue looks like a factory problem to my untrained eye.

I hope Toyota makes it right for you.

    Report back on the status.

    Thanks.

Actually...after reading the production dates....her Corolla isn't involved. Who knows?

Rather than thickness....it looks more like an adhesion issue.

On both rear doors in the same area, there is orange peel. I believe both sides will eventually fail, but was rather surprised when so much fell/flakes off in one afternoon

I highly doubt Toyota will take care of this issue for me, but I will make sure my presence is known... if I can’t get it resolved for myself, hopefully it will help other current owners

You might get better results if you stay cool with the dealership, as it’s better to have them on your side.

Bring a notebook with you and let the people you speak with see you write down their names and note what they say.

This gets people’s attention and will be helpful down the line if you don’t get a quick resolution.

If you live near Miami, there are probably a few Toyota dealers close by. If the first dealership isn’t getting it done, try another one.

And yeah, it sucks having this issue with your truck.

    Good luck.

I’m usually pretty level headed and like they say you get more bees with honey than vinegar.
I’m sure there can be some sort of a diplomatic solution

I have the same issue with my 2nd gen as do many others. I have been told by Toyota that if they get enough complaints about it they will add the tacoma to the Customer Support Program ZKG which will repair the issue or reimburse people who have already paid for a repair. Here is the link to my thread with pics of my truck. https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/14-tacoma-superwhite-040-peeling.673060/

From what I understand it's the paint itself, not the process. T4Rs made in japan that are super white have the same issue. It's because super white apparently is applied as a single stage (but has clear coat mixed in with the base), so the clear coat is really thin compared to other colors. This is why the blizzard pearl white costs like 500 bucks more than the super white.

Same here, went today to the dealer and denied, vin number is not in the program. Called Toyota headquarters and fill a complaint, hope more people do the same so we can get out trucks fixed.

Seems like the more we can make the issue known the better the odds of being reimbursed. I was just told mine isn't covered but I will try Toyota HQ instead of my local dealer. IMG_20201027_212740539_HDR.jpg

This isn't a result of a single stage process. 040 has a white primer under the base coat. That green you see is the ED coating....which is under the primer. So it's not a base coat/clear coat failure....but rather some sort of adhesion failure of the primer.

Many models like the Camry have 4 separate film build layers of ED, primer, base coat and clear coat. A few of these have reported the issue as well. All seem to exhibit the green layer. That points to a primer issue.
